From 1850-1917 the region was part of the Erivan Governorate
At the start of the 20th century, Armenians made up about 42% of the total population
Despite earlier reassurances Nakhichevan, along with Artsakh and Kirovabad, was given to Azerbaijan
In about 5 years after taht, that 40% turned into 10%, and pretty soon zero after that
During the war, as the tide had turned in favor of Armenia, there was attempts to retake Nakhichevan as well, but they were shut because of hesitance by the Armenian govt, and pressure by regional powers.

If Armenia had taken Nakhichevan in 93-94, our fortunes would have been dramatically different today. All major Armenian Soviet transport routes (rail/highway) to Iran run through Nakhichevan. Whereas the Iranian-Armenian border is 35km of mountainous hell, Nakhichevan shares more that 200km of border with Iran. Billions would have been saved in attempts to build highways and rails in that impossible terrain, while boosting the Armenian economy massively from the start of independence.
    Great response, thanks!

The reason why Armenia didnt take Nakhichevan was because of Turkey.
In light of the Armenians' advance into Azerbaijan, Turkey's prime minister Tansu Çiller, warned the Armenian government not to attack Nakhichevan and demanded that Armenians pull out of Azerbaijan's territories. Thousands of Turkish troops were sent to the border between Turkey and Armenia in early September. Russian Federation forces in Armenia in turn countered their movements and thus warded off the possible Turkish participation in the conflict.

I think i know whats going on with these raids. The azeris hope that these constant raids and firefights will annoy Armenia and eventually make Armenia attack azerbaijan. The Armenians will be viewed as the aggressors, which would win more allies for azerbaijan.

Well if they are claiming we are aggressive then lets not let them down......we get away with it just like they do with Minsk group.

They are testing our weak point in the border, and with a new defense minister in charge of the military, they are trying to portray change in the army to their people and to "guarantee" a win in the next war so the people don't coupe against aliyev.also a good away to disturb Armenians with hostilities in front making us less active on the issue of genocide centennial, what u point out is a good way to blame it all on us at the end like a whiny turd like they are, good thinking there
