Correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not any close to knowing as much about air force and its role,but won't helicopters and jets be obsolete during a new war for us and the enemy I mean both sides posses different varieties of air defense systems and by the relatively slow speed of the helicopters on top of the battle and its surrounding waiting for supporting the troops by air strikes,evacuation and transport they would easily fall a pray for the adversarie's air defense forces,specially with iglas which are mobile and quickly deployable.and can anyone clarify the difference between the old and these new iglas,and just some basic info thanks folks

Well...here are a couple of reasons:

1. Both, aircrafts and choppers, can operate well in mountainous terrain, where the coverage of anti-aircraft systems can be weak.
2. They are still effective for surprise attacks flying low below AA coverage
3. In case the enemy enters your territory you can use the aircraft over your own borders for defensive missions (i.e. striking the enemy within your own borders)
4. If you manage to hit the enemies AA sites with you long range missiles, having an airforce would be a big advantage
5. I'm not familiar with the type of radars our Su-25s have...but if they can be equipped with long range AA missiles...they can mean hell even for the Azeri MiG-29s...Airforce is no longer about dogfights..it's about having the best radars and best missiles.
6. You can expect that in a possible war scenario the AA coverage over the battlefield (specially the AA coverage of the attacking force) cannot be optimal. Gaps will be created and the airforce can effectively strike targets within these gaps.

I hope someone can inform us of what missiles and armaments our planes and helicopters actually utilize...and if they can give us an idea of the radar coverage of our planes...

The SU-25 mostly carries the R-60K AA missiles long range of 8km and short range 300m. It is one of the most agile missiles out there and weighs only 44kg.




The wings have ten pylons for carrying a range of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon systems selected for the mission. Air-to-ground missiles include Kh-23 (Nato codename AS-7 Kerry), Kh-25ML (AS-10 Karen) and Kh-29l (AS-14 Kedge). The air-to-air missiles carried on the smaller outboard pylons are the R-3S (AA-2D Atoll) and the R-60 (AA-8 Aphid).
The aircraft can be fitted with UB-32A pods for 57mm S-5 rockets, B-8M1 pods for 80mm S-8 rockets, S-24 240mm guided rockets and S-25 330mm guided rockets.
The Su-25 can be armed with 350kg-670kg laser-guided bombs, 500kg incendiary devices and cluster bombs.
The aircraft's twin-barrel gun, the 30mm AO-17A, is installed in the underside of the fuselage on the port side. The gun is armed with 250 rounds of ammunition and is capable of firing at a burst rate of 3,000 rounds a minute. SPPU-22 gun pods can also be installed on the underwing pylons. The pods carry the GSh-23 23mm twin-barrel guns, each with 260 rounds of ammunition.

The aircraft is equipped with an integrated navigation and aiming system, including ASP-17 BTs-8 gun / bomb sight with an AKS-750s camera installed in the nose. The nose also houses a Klyon PS laser ranger and target designator, manufactured by the Urals Optical and Mechanical Plant (YOM3).

The electronic warfare suite includes an SPO-15 Sirena-3 radar warning receiver and a Gardeniya radar jammer. The ASO-2V decoy dispenser can deploy chaff and flares for protection against radar and infrared guided missiles.

The aircraft is equipped with an RSBN tactical air navigation system (TACAN), MRP-56P marker beacon receiving unit, RV-1S radio altimeter and various air data and acceleration indicators.
The communications systems include an SRO-2 identification friend or foe (IFF) transponder and a SO-69 air traffic control transponder, together with VHF/UHF transceivers and an air-to-ground radio.

Eddo..this is the standard info we can all get on the net....what about our birds? what armaments do we actually have? What bombs? what missiles? do our birds have any modern electronics? have they been upgraded? any info?

Eddo..this is the standard info we can all get on the net....what about our birds? what armaments do we actually have? What bombs? what missiles? do our birds have any modern electronics? have they been upgraded? any info?

I would guess we have only standard equipment flying the basic models of SU-25. We do have AAs on our Frogs but no match for Mig-29
