nice pictures, though I'm troubled about the recent violence in the army, and the type of violence is not new, it has to be stopped, it's terrible some of the things that are happening to some of the young conscripts. My cousin is serving right now, though thankfully not in Karabakh, I forgot where exactly he's serving but I know it's south of yerevan.

BAKU - Azerbaijan is to nearly double its defense spending next year, the finance minister said Oct. 12, amid rising tensions in its conflict with Armenia over the rebel Nagorny Karabakh region.

Finance Minister Samir Sharifov told parliament defense spending under the country's 2011 budget would rise 89.7 percent to 2.5 billion Azerbaijani manats ($3.1 billion).

"Defense spending in 2011 will account for 19.7 percent compared with 10.7 percent in 2010, so the share of defense spending in the budget will almost double," he told lawmakers considering next year's draft budget.

Nearly 1.1 billion manats ($1.4 billion) of the spending will be used to modernize the Azerbaijani military through the purchase of up-to-date equipment and weaponry, he said.

Sharifov said more money would also be allocated for the development of Azerbaijan's defense industry but did not elaborate.

Locked in a long-simmering conflict with Armenia over Karabakh and awash in revenues from energy exports, the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan had already nearly doubled defense spending in the previous two years.

Ethnic Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized control of the Nagorny Karabakh region during a war in the early 1990s that left an estimated 30,000 dead and the region remains outside Azerbaijani control.

Tensions over Karabakh have been increasing this year amid stalled peace talks, with the number of deadly skirmishes along a cease-fire line on the rise for months.

At least 18 soldiers on both sides have been reported killed in clashes this year, including eight soldiers killed last month alone.

Money won't change the fact that Azeris don't know how to fight...

Iranian Defense Minister In Baku For Security Talks
BAKU -- Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi arrived today in Baku on a two-day visit to discuss expanding bilateral military cooperation and regional security, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

Vahidi told journalists at the Baku airport that his meetings with Azerbaijani officials will be beneficial for both countries and for the region. He said he will also discuss Caspian Sea-region security and stability issues with Azerbaijani officials.

Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev told Vahidi that Baku wants stability in the region but that Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan undermines regional security, the Defense Ministry's press service reported.

"Some states have not recognized Armenia as an aggressor state. They render economic and military assistance to the aggressor while declaring Azerbaijan a friendly and brotherly country," Abiyev said.

Iran has political and economic ties with both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Yerevan and Baku went to war from 1991-94 over the breakaway Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Some analysts say Iran wants to use the Qabala radar station, which Azerbaijan currently leases to Russia.

Azerbaijani military expert Uzeyir Cafarov told RFE/RL that Iran is concerned with its own security.

"Iran is concerned that U.S. soldiers could come to the region and create a threat to Iran. But Azerbaijan has its own interests, and the final decisions [regarding Qabala] will become known early next year," Cafarov said.

Niyaz Yaqublu, who heads a Baku think tank, says Iran is taking diplomatic steps in the South Caucasus because it fears international sanctions. "But Iran has not changed its basic attitude toward Azerbaijan; this country's political existence and economic development are not advantageous for Iran," he said.

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmedinejad and parliament speaker Ali Larijani -- who is on a visit to Armenia today -- are scheduled to visit Baku in November.

Iran canceled its visa requirement for Azerbaijanis early this year, but Azerbaijan has not reciprocated as it fears an influx of migrants from Iran.

An estimated 15 to 25 percent of Iran's population of some 74 million people are ethnic Azeris.

It is not a secret that Iran is well aware of dangers of Azeri coorporation with Israel and the use of the Azeri land to stage a invasion into Iran by Israel and US. That will never happen and if it does it will fail badly and give Armenians an opertunity liberate more land with Irans support.

Azerbaijan won't allow Israel to do that, they are not that stupid.

Azeris have claims on northern Iran (Tabriz area) and they already allow US aircraft to land/fuel on their way to ME. Also they have their nose so deep up the Israeli butt that even Turks are going wow.

How about all the Azeris living in Iran, especially in the North. After all the Ayatollah is an ethnic Azeri. I don't see how a war between the two would happen. they are too close ethnically and culturally, they simply have to many ties.

Also, I've been wondering about this, I've heard from a source that Armenia has okay'd USA using its airfields, in exchange for the military aid it gets(i think around 10million), anyone can confirm this?
