Turkey's Erdogan reported to have called for referendum in 'Western Thrace'

Just a few days after his provocative statements questioning the territorial borders set by the Treaty of Lausanne, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made new claims, calling for a referendum in "Western Thrace," according to the Athens-Macedonia News Agency.

"Turkey is not just Turkey," Erdogan was quoted as saying. "Apart from its 79 million citizens, it is also responsible to the hundreds of millions of our brothers in the geographical area to which we are connected by historical and cultural ties."

Erdogan said that in 1920 Turkey's then National Assembly decided on a "national contract" that set out the borders of Turkey, noting that based on that decision, referendums should be held to settle regions of the former Ottoman regime where there was Arab majority in 1918 when an armistice was signed marking the defeat of the Ottoman Empire.

According to Erdogan, that same decision noted that the legal status of regions including "Western Thrace" should be determined by a free referendum in the area.

Erdogan added that "certain historians believe that the borders set by the national contract include Cyprus, Aleppo, Mosul, Erbil, Kirkuk, Batumi, Thessaloniki, Kardzhali, Varna and the islands of the Aegean."

STEPANAKERT, NKR (A.W.)—Armenian serviceman Vahagn Virabyan (b. 1997) was killed by Azerbaijani fire on Oct. 15. Virabyan was killed on the southern direction of the Nagorno-Karabagh (Artsakh/NKR) Line of Contact (LoC) at around 8:40 a.m. according to a press statement released by the NKR Defense Ministry.

The report also indicated that an investigation into Virabyan’s death has been launched by the ministry.

Virabyan’s death comes four days after another Armenian serviceman, Sanasar Grigoryan (b. 1989), was killed by Azerbaijani fire on Oct. 11. Grigoryan was killed on the eastern direction of the NKR LoC.

Four days before Grigoryan’s death, on Oct. 7, Armenian serviceman Hayk Hambardzumyan (b. 1996) sustained a gunshot wound in his chest while serving on the NKR LoC. On Oct. 10, Hambardzumyan was transferred from the Stepanakert Military Hospital to Yerevan by helicopter, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Three weeks ago, another Armenian serviceman, Sevak Khachatryan (b. 1997) was killed on morning of Sept. 25. According to a statement released by the NKR Defense Ministry, Khachatryan received a fatal gunshot wound at around 10:40 a.m. on Sept. 25, after Azerbaijani troops committed over 50 ceasefire violations, firing around 600 shots towards Armenian positions using various caliber firearms.

Temperatures have dropped significantly in Armenia, and there have been reports of snowfall. The chance of largescale fighting is diminishing, but not ruled out of course.
