High School Locked Down Following Fight

VAN NUYS, Calif. -- Grant High School was ordered locked down Tuesday afternoon while police searched the campus for weapons, a police officer said.
Officers were sent to the school in the 13000 block of Oxnard Street about 12:05 p.m. after a fight that may have involved several hundred students broke out, said Los Angeles police Officer Grace Brady.
Students said the fight was triggered by a racial tensions. School officials told NBC4 News that a racial problem at the school is being addressed.
"I would say that we are making progress," said Sue Shannon, a district spokesperson. "I don't think that you always change things overnight."
There were no immediate reports of arrests or injuries. Students were released in small groups.
School officials said more student and parent involvement is needed to address the problems.

One school police officer and five students were treated for minor injuries. "They've had Hispanic and Armenian strife going on for a while now, and this is possibly related," said school police Sgt. Hector Rodriguez.
