I'm a newcomer

Hi y'all! I'm a 24 year old guy living in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I work in a call center and one day when talking to a customer on the phone the guy sitting next to me said "Look! The woman is talking to her husband in Armenian! Can we speak a language other than English or Spanish?" He started speaking Armenian and I fell in love with the language. It was "love at first hearing".

From then on I started looking for information on the internet but I haven't found many things... he gave me some lessons but that's not enough. I've learned the alphabet (?) and I'm trying to read (ha!) a book for little kids in (Western) Armenian. I have Pimsleur course as well. I want to buy the course from www.discoverarmenian.com, but I don't know if it's good. Perhaps you can check it out... or send me the torrent! ...haha... well, it's too expensive for me, it's in dollars...

Do you happen to have a (GOOD) dictionary on your computers? Where can I get information regarding the grammar of Western Armenian? And I'd like to know if this is the right place to ask questions about the language, grammar, vocabulary, things I don't understand and so on... ok?

I hope to meet many interesting people here.

Interesting. Maybe it depends where they're from. The people I know, including my family, are aware of the fact that these are Persian words, but they use them in their Armenian anyway, e.g. "skhal khiabanov as gnum", "du mite kuchekum as aprum?".

Other interesting words in PA:

ghand for shaqar
shaqar for shaqaravaz
faandaak for var'ich
khr'tsik for tiknik
dugh for t'an
otanav for inqnatir'/samalyot
arzhan for ezhan
metsmam/metspap for tatik/papik

and the classic (from my aunt on diapers in a convo with a Hayastanci):

"Ha? Duq tur asum aq taki shor? Minq tur asum inq qaqa shor."

hey... we say jisht too, but we're Western Armenians (Bolsahyes)...

Have you heard the joke about a Halebci and a Hayastanci climbing a mountain?

From what I've heard, tseke in Eastern Armenian means to pull, while it means the opposite (to let go) in Western, which leads to the joke about A Halebci and a Hayastanci climbing a mountain, and when the Hayastanci needs help getting up, the Halebci passes down a rope. The Hayastanci yells, tseke, and so the argument commences.

I heard the Halebcis use it and it's also used in Armenia, and I guess also Iran.

edit: I don't know if Western Armenian has the word հայաթ, also used for թաղ in Armenia.

Then what about "poghota"? I've heard variations between poghota and poghod. Maybe poghod is Russian. I don't always know those loan words from Russian.
