Armenian & African-American Communities : An imperceptable genocidal link ?
Re: Armenian & African-American Communities : An imperceptable genocidal link ?
Of course there is the demography problem of Armenia and Armenians in diaspora. We have to work on this, but this is the top of the iceberg. There are other important levels : houses, social security, psycho-sociology, education, schools, etc, etc.
Another time also I'll try to analyze and write about this inter racial question, but it is not the priority. The important priority is the (Armenian) family : how to communicate Armenian cultural and affective values from one generation to the other.
I know, you know families with both Armenian parents who do not, who have not, who did not succeed this inter generation communication. This does not deal with racial or genetic matters.
Now which is important is to valorize our diasporic situation and to have rich, worthy relations with other peoples : French, British, Italian, American, etc., etc... [...and even the Turkish people]. We have the chance to have a very valuable historical-cultural capital : http://www.globalarmenianheritage-ad...ays/63home.htm
As regarding relations of Armenians with African Americans, you have my former messages. I have just had a new idea which can enrich and help Armenia. It is to present African American Litterature to Armenia :
Look, how late we are. This Wikipedia page does not exist in Armenian language ! It is important to organize a conference on African American Literature in Yerevan, to invite Maya Angelou (we have to hurry, she is aged), Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, etc, etc.
Come on you guys, move on the right direction. Contact your colored teachers, professors, collegues, Congressmen and explain such a project. First begin with your town, your highschool, your college, your library, etc. ,etc.
Please, contact Dr Aram Goudsouzian of Memphis University :

Armenians are an ethnic group, blacks are a whole race, they can afford to inter marry with other races and the black race will not be threatened.
Armenians are few, if we became more tolerant of inter-marriage, especially inter racial, then what the hell would be the point of having an independent Armenia, or even calling oneself Armenian?
The demographic factor is a big deal when we are talking about Armenians.
Sure both us and blacks have suffered in many ways but thats life. You pick up and move on instead of dwelling on tragic events which both blacks and armenians do. If you can get justice then great if not, then you dont make it your excuse, you move on!
Well there are political gains to be made by living in the past, and playing on peoples emotions...not from those who did the wrong, but from those who you will exploit (emotionally/mentally) while selling yourself as their redeemer.
I'd rather see Armenians move on past the genocide and accept our own failings, so we can move towards the future. We don't like to talk about Armenian on Armenian abuse (of immigrants to the US in the early 20th century), or the murder of Leon Tourian, or the cold war battles (CIA/KGB) by Armenian communists, socialists and Tashnags), Armenian-on-Armenian violence during the genocide, or the sex-slave trade problem. The Genocide is a distraction to our REAL problems, and our socio-political maturity. Those who fight the hardest for the genocide are the ones who don't want to see our community truly blossom and bear fruit.
Unlike blacks, who accept inter-marriage easily, we Armenians are a dying orchard, and it is because of our pride and prejudice.

Berlin was maybe a defeat in his boxing carreer but it can be the starting point of a sportive and marvellous friendship of an African American boxer with an Armenian one : http://www.flickr.com/photos/shospor...07824952/show/
Haykakan, please try also to contact US Armenians in boxing :
Re: Armenian & African-American Communities : An imperceptable genocidal link ?
My wife and i met up with another armenian couple the other night at a bar/restaurant that all four of us had been to before. Last time they had a pretty cool band playing and we figured they would have the same thing again so we were expecting a bunch of white people and a decent band. When we got there we were the only non-blacks there and as time went by the place got filled to the hilt and still we were the only white people there. Instead of a band they had a DJ that night so i was disapointed untill he started playing his tune. The DJ turned out to be freakin awsome he had the whole place dancing all night with great music and everyone including us non-blacks were having a great time drinking good booz, eating decent food and partying down to some great music. We had a better time that night then the last time we were there. Racism is a ugly thing and it sadens me to see racists in this forum. Racism is simply a product of ignorence and nothing else.
