Yes they can, and that pretty much possible. The important thing is the intentions. If you intentionally and willingly do it, thats a problem.

The most important thing is being consistent in 5 pillars of Islam and 6 principles of faith. If you try to confrom your life with those and try to avoid contradictions, hopefully God may forgive sins(if they are repented). By our nature(as humans) we do actually commit sins do mistakes. But it is also part of our nature to avoid sins do good deeds. Our intentions should be avoiding those and ask mercy of God, and hope to be saved on the day of judgement.
