Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

Erdem Angry With Academic's Attendance At Seminar

"The views expressed by Berktay do not reflect the truth of the
matter," Erdem said, noting that many objective historians have said
the tragic events of 1915 cannot be described as genocide.

What an idiot all he has to say is Berktay's position on the Armenian Genocide does not reflect the official stand of Turkey!

'Three Turkish Voices' At Ucla, November 6

Los Angeles - A forum titled "Three Turkish Voices on the Ottoman Armenians" will take place on the UCLA campus on Sunday afternoon, November 6, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The program is organized by Professor Richard Hovhannisian, Armenian Educational Foundation Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA, with the cooperation of the G.E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies. It will be held in the Court of Sciences 50 (Young Hall), with parking available in Structure 2, Hilgard Avenue at Westholme. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Dr. Hovhannisian stated: "The forum will bring to UCLA three Turkish scholars who are examining the causes, responsibility, and consequences of what happened to the Armenian population during the final decades of the Ottoman Empire and the first years of the Republic of Turkey. They figure among the growing number of Turkish intellectuals who seek to crack the wall of official Turkish denial. They are prepared to challenge the state-sponsored narrative of events and thereby advance the quest for truth and the evolving process Armenian-Turkish dialogue." Dr. Taner Akcam of the Department of History, University of Minnesota, will speak on "A New Assessment of the Ottoman Documents" giving examples of the important evidence that can be found in the archives despite extensive purging.

He is a pioneering author of many publications in Turkish, German, and English relating to fate of the Armenian people, including "From Empire to Republic: Turkish Nationalism and the Armenian Genocide." Dr. Elif Shafak of the Department of Near Eastern Studies, University of Arizona, will discuss "Memory and Literature." She is a novelist who writes and publishes both in Turkish and in English. The daughter of a member of the Turkish diplomatic corps, she has reflected: "Faced with hatred, I hated back. But that was as far as my feelings went. It took me years to ask the simple question: Why did the Armenians hate us?"

Dr. Fatma Miige Gocek of the Department of Sociology and Program in Women's Studies, University of Michigan, will report on "The Recent Istanbul Conference on the Ottoman Armenians." She was among the organizers of that conference that convened belatedly in September and has also been a co-organizer of Armenian-Turkish workshops in Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Salzburg, Austria.

The UCLA forum promises to be informative and stimulating. A discussion period will follow the presentations. For additional information, e-mail Professor Hovannisian at [email protected] or telephone in the morning hours: 310-825-3375.

I went and just got home... I was 10 minutes late (because of my friend ) and there was no room in the main lecture hall. I guess they weren't expecting this huge crowd. So many young people... people were amazed. It was great! So they opened another lecture hall and had the rest of the attendees sit there (and there were still people left outside) and once Tener Ackam was done in the first room, he came to ours. His main focus was on the Turkish documents and that not only they don't dismiss the genocide, but they actually prove it. He gave some examples. It was VERY interesting. I might write more on his speech later, I'm too tired.

Elif Shafak... her speech was unique. I loved it!!! She said in Turkey today, when they use the word "Armenian" it's a stereotype. There is no face to go with the word cause they don't know any Armenians, unlike their grand parents who grew up with them. He also said, we should try to understand why Turks are so ignorant.. the history they were taught is completely different from the reality that happened and not everyone has the ability to question the things he's already learned. She also said it's amazing how young Armenian teenagers that she sees and talk to have a memory of an old survivor... but Turkish teenagers, same age, their memory starts from 1923. They don't think what happened before that is not part of their country's history, it happened in another country, and they don't care to learn about it much. I'll probably write more on her speech later on too.

And Fatma Muge Gocek, very funny lady . She talked about the conference that was held in Turkey last month and how it kept getting cancelled and that actually 3 thousand Turkish people were interested in attending it, but only 120 attendees were allowed! She said it's a big step for Turkey. She also said people threw tomatoes and eggs at the attendees when it was finally held . She said some of her fathers friends consider her a traitor, and she said I tell my dad, I'm a scholar. I read alot - probably more than I should. Ask your friends to read my books and I'll be happy to discuss it with them but after they read my writings. She said she never hears from them again. haha.

I loved it... and best of luck to all three professors. They are very well educated in our cause and are determined to get the truth out.

BTW I didn't mention this in my original post:
Tener Akcam is from the University of Minesota.
Elif Shafak is from the University of Arizona.
And Fatma Muge Gocek is from the University of Michigan.
