If Pamuk Had Explained His Words, Everything Would Be in Another Way

Turkish FM Abdullah Gul has denied the reports that differences have appeared in the Government over the disputed 301 article of the Turkish Criminal Code. Conversations on that topic began after Turkish Minister of Justice Jemil Cicek stated the article on insulting the dignity of the Turkish people cannot be changed or withdrawn from the Criminal Code in the near future. Commenting on the trial on Orhan Pamuk's case J. Cicek said, «If he further explained his statement, this would not take place. If he had said he meant something different or the translation was not correct, it would be much better.» It should be reminded that Pamuk's interview to Tages Anzeiger Swiss newspaper is the point. During the interview the famous writer spoke about 1 million Armenians and 30 thousand Kurds killed in Turkey.

Azeri Officials Dismiss Armenians’ Claims on Destruction of Graves

Azeri officials have dismissed Armenians’ claims on the alleged destruction of Armenian graves at an old cemetery of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, saying that these statements simply target misleading the international community.
27/12/2005 21:12

Commenting on a letter containing these claims, sent to the Azeri embassy in Washington by the Armenian National Committee of America on behalf of co-chairs of the US congressional taskforce on Armenian issues Frank Pallone and Joe Knollenberg, a presidential administration official said, “I call on Congressmen to visit Nagorno Karabakh and seven other regions under Armenian occupation to witness who are the ones destroying the historic monuments, museums and ancient graves.”

The President’s Office international relations department head Novruz Mammadov continued that Armenians have been trying to misinform the US Senate and House of Representatives on the matter.

“The truth is that 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory has been leveled,” he said, warning that these actions will not benefit Armenians in any way.

"The Crypto-Armenians among us":

Cyprus Press and Information Office
<http://www.pio.gov.cy/>
Dec 30, 2005

Istanbul MILLI GAZETE newspaper (28.12.05) publishes the following
report under the title: "The Crypto-Armenians among us":

The descendants of the "Crypto-Armenians" who hid their identities
and appeared to be Muslims in order to escape from the forced
migration applied during the deportations imposed in 1915 are now
returning to their true identities.

It has been stated that Armenians who changed their religion to be
ostensible Muslims in order to escape from the forced migration due
to the deportation imposed by the Ottoman State in 1915, or else who
were given to various families for adoption, succeeded in hiding
their existence under this "secret identity" for many years. It is
being claimed that there are currently 30 to 40 thousand
"Crypto-Armenians" living in Turkey as Turks or Kurds.

According to Professor Salim Cohce, who is known for his researches
regarding the Armenians, the Crypto-Armenians appear to be Muslims
but still maintain their Gregorian traditions. Cohce, stating that
some studies have been carried out on these people in recent periods,
points out that, in the near future, they are going to be used in
order to realize the dreams of the Armenians.

Cohce says that they identified over 3,500 Crypto-Armenians in
fieldwork conducted in Malatya.

Speaking with Aksiyon magazine, Cohce states that yet another
interesting determination had been made in Tunceli. He stresses that
the population records of two thousand people were taken to Aydin
although they themselves did not emigrate, and that two years later,
these records were modified to read "Muslim" rather than "Christian"
in the religion category, and they were then taken back to Tunceli.
Cohce states that the number of converts to Islam following the
deportation was about 100 thousand.

There are 40 thousand hidden Armenians

According to a study entitled "Armenians in Turkey Today" [provided
in English] written in 2002 by Dr Tessa Hofmann, who serves as an
"expert witness" in the hearings of Turks of Armenian origin who
apply for political asylum in Germany, there are "40 thousand hidden
Armenians" in Turkey. But it is being seen clearly, in the numbers of
people changing their religions, that, apart from certain exceptions,
the Armenians who ostensibly converted to Islam in the past are now
engaged in returning to their actual identities. While 2,630 people
in Turkey changed their religions during the years 1916-2004, 2,172
of these consisted of those returning to their previous religions.
Over 60 percent of those returning to their original religion, or
1,340 people, consisted of Armenians. Those changing their religions
were largely registered in various provinces such as Istanbul,
Diyarbakir, Adiyaman, Batman, Sivas, Tunceli, Malatya, Elazig,
Kayseri, Mersin, and Mardin.

Professor Salim Cohce explains that activities involving hidden and
converted Armenians in Malatya increased after 1995, and that in
2003, some 120 persons of Armenian origin with Muslim names submitted
a petition for the re-opening of the church at Cavusoglu.

Cohce stresses that covert efforts are being made, via citizens of
Armenian origin, to regain deed records and former properties. Cohce
also claims that, during investigations conducted in Malatya, they
identified "converts" [Turkish muhtedi] who had assumed the position
of MHP [Nationalist Action Party] Provincial Chairman.

Could be used in "Urban Terrorism"

Cohce, indicating that there are also, among the converts, those who
truly became Muslims and live accordingly, says that "The 'Crypto-'
or 'secret' Armenians are those who only appear to be Muslim in
identity. Since they have not to date been seen as a threat, they
have not been monitored by the state. Also, they have manipulated
their population records. For this reason, it is very difficult to
determine their actual numbers."

Stressing his belief that the Crypto-Armenians are going to
constitute a danger, Cohce points as examples to the efforts made by
Armenian groups regarding them, particularly in recent years. Cohce
claims that "Efforts are being made to remind them of their
identities. Financial assistance is being provided. I think that,
just like the emergence of the PKK after ASALA [Armenian Secret Army
for the Liberation of Armenia], these people will be used for "urban
terrorism" within Turkey in the post-PKK period. Such a formation
could be brought about by 2010. Likewise, I believe that, by
reminding them consciously of their Armenian identity, these people
are in the future going to come before Turkey with demands for land
and compensation."

Maintain close contact with PKK

Cohce, drawing attention to the close contact between the
Crypto-Armenians and the PKK, says the following: "A meeting was held
in 1980 at the Gulbenkian Foundation, which financed ASALA. It was
decided to use the PKK as a "pawn" organization in order for Turkey's
authority in the region to be weakened, and for its population to be
reduced. The PKK's initial ability to form an effective lobby in
Europe and the United States, and to get support, came about with the
help of these circles. And the existence of individuals of Armenian
origin within the PKK, and even the killing of a number of them,
corroborates this. Likewise, the existence of 'Turks' among the
founders and current leaders of the PKK is thought-provoking."
"All truth passes through three stages:
First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident."

Armenian Brides

Heranus was a little child that Corporal Huseyin adopted during the Armenian emigration. Her father went to the United States to find a job before the emigration began. In other words, it was not in Turkey where he looked for a job. Heranus, placed under the protection of Corporal Huseyin when her mother was forced to emigrate to Aleppo, married Fikri, the nephew of Corporal Huseyin’s wife after she was given a Muslim name, Seher.

Meanwhile, Horen, adopted by a family living in another village and whose name was afterwards changed to Ahmet, visited his sister to tell her about their father, who had once come as far as Aleppo in search of his kids and had written a letter to them. While Horen took with him the express letter he received from his father through unofficial means to Aleppo, his sister did not accompany him. Horen accompanied his parents during their emigration to the US, whereas Seher stayed with her family in Turkey… They kept in touch by corresponding with each other. Horan sent letters to Seher to visualize the moments when he was photographed along with his parents. Seher also sent photographs of herself and her family from the Maden district of Elazig to her parents. Seher never met her parents and her brother who immigrated to the US again…

The Ottoman state was in a very confused situation early in the 20th century. While the pains of the Balkan War had not subsided, having to fight on dozens of different fronts during World War I brought with it massive destruction. Both the state and the society suffered serious traumas. The valiant warriors never returned from Gallipoli, Galicia, Palestine and Yemen. In the meantime, the missionaries were provoking ethnic groups in the country. The nationalist movements in the Ottoman Empire were tearing the country, already weakened as a result of World War I, apart. The Albanians, the Bulgarians and the Arabs were all seceding from the empire. Instigated by the Russians and missionaries, the pro-Tashnaks also wanted to secede from the country. “The pro-Tashnaks really wanted to take the advantage of our fathers serving in the army,” said an old man from Erzurum while recounting those days. All these were causing great sufferings. The Armenians were forced to emigrate all the way to the south. The situation affected a huge civilian population.

Anyway, let’s return to our initial story. I read Heranus’ story in a report by Erhan Basyurt, published in the Aksiyon news magazine, under the headline, “My Grandma is an Armenian.” I felt great grief and sorrow when I read it. I put aside such elements as social trauma, emigration and deaths; I mostly felt pity for a kid and her parents not able to see each other again. And then I cursed the pro-Tashnaks, the Unionists, the servants of the Tsars, and I also cursed the Protestant missionaries the most, because they all instigated one community against the other, whereas both communities had actually lived without troubling each other for over 1,000 years.

I am sure that most of us have similar stories in our minds as well as in our bags. My grandpa’s brother -- actually not his brother but his cousin, however, they were close enough to be brothers -- married an Armenian girl whose family had immigrated to the US. His kids were the cousins of my parents and we had strong kinship ties with them. I never saw that woman, but family members talked about her all the time.

I learned that the original name of this woman was Haykanor, who was very deep in her religious feelings although she was a converted Muslim, she did not respond positively when her siblings came from the US to take her with them to America, and she refused to live apart from her family. Her sister, Aunt Halime, still alive, would say with great sadness that she never had a chance to see her own uncles or cousins who were living in the US. Although Haykanor did not accept the proposal of her siblings to spend the rest of her life in the US, she managed to keep track of her siblings. She, however, lost track of them again. She never ever saw her parents again.

Although the Turkish and Armenian people belong to different religions, there have actually been kinship ties between them. A 1,000-year-old ancient friend. When did the Turks fight the Armenians before the 1900s? They managed to live together on friendly terms for 1,000 years. Some Armenian nationalists, some stupid Unionists and Russians dragged the two nations into a conflict. This fight later turned into a blood feud with assistance from the big countries. What a crying shame!

So Armenians never lived in Julfa the those aren't our graveyards being destroyed!

Yeah right... we're dealing with some professional liars here... aka Azeri "historians".

NAKHCHIVAN. “Since Armenians never lived in Julfa, how could they have graves there? We have historical facts to prove this”.

This statement was given to Nakhchivan bureau of APA by member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Science, teacher of Archeology and Ethnography Institute, Dr. of Historical Sciences Vali Bakhshaliyev. According to his words investigation conducted in the territories of Julfa recently show that our forefathers settled in these territories BC 4th-3rd millennium. Monuments in Hahajir, Goynuk, Bananyar villages of Julfa prove that 7 old Turk tribes lived in Julfa, because old Chul tribes lived in the territory, the name Julfa is associated with these tribes: “Here was Chola territory, Turkish tribes lived here. The claims of Armenian are historically and ethnically groundless. There was not any Armenian graveyard in Julfa. Ancient Alban state was in the territory of Azerbaijan. It is clear that Albans were Christian”.
According to the words of V.Bakhshaliyev, Armenians want to appropriate the places where they see cross: “Their aim is to divert attention of international organizations and community”.
Julfa executive Power informed Nakhchivan bureau of APA that Armenians have never lived in Julfa: “Some railroaders were here in middle of XX century, when they died, their relatives took them to Mehri or other territories and buried there; “Near the border between Julfa and Islamic Republic of Iran there were some graves of Russian soldier who died while serving in the border in Russian Empire”. Head of Julfa Statistic Department Abulfaz Garalov told APA that only 15-16 Armenian families lived in Julfa in 1970s: “When Armenians died, they were taken to Armenia and buried there”.
Residents of Julfa 70-year old Najafgulu Huseynov and 80-year old Bika told the correspondent of APA that neither they saw nor their parents said that Armenians lived in Julfa. /APA/

Justice minister calls for apology from Turkish novelist accused of insulting nation

AP Worldstream; Jan 06, 2006
SELCAN HACAOGLU

Turkey's justice minister on Friday called on novelist Orhan Pamuk to
apologize to the nation for remarks that landed him in court, and said
he would decide whether to drop charges against the writer before a
Feb. 7 hearing. European officials have demanded that Turkey drop the
case against Pamuk and do more to protect freedom of
expression. Justice Minister Cemil Cicek, who has the final say in
whether to proceed with the trial, urged the author to apologize to
the Turkish people for his remarks.

"I would do it, I would say 'I am sorry,'" Cicek said during a live
interview on private NTV television. "I wish he would."

Cicek said speeding up Pamuk's trial would amount to unfair "VIP
treatment."

Using a new law that makes it a crime to insult Turkey, authorities
charged Pamuk after a Swiss newspaper quoted him as saying: "30,000
Kurds and 1 million Armenians were killed in these lands, and nobody
but me dares to talk about it."

Pamuk's remarks referred to two of the most painful episodes in recent
Turkish history: the massacre of Armenians during World War I, which
Turkey insists was not a planned genocide, and recent guerrilla
fighting in Turkey's overwhelmingly Kurdish southeast.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul acknowledged the case had tarnished the
country's image abroad and said that laws limiting freedom of
expression could be changed.

Cicek criticized Pamuk for not making timely conciliatory remarks,
hinting that such a move would have prevented his trial.

"Why didn't he come out and say: 'I never said such a thing'" Cicek
asked. "He should have said: 'I apologize to my nation.'"

The trial was halted by a judge on Dec. 16, the day it began, to wait
for the consent of the Justice Ministry.

Okl Starts Actions "against All"

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 1. ARMINFO. The Azeri Organization for Karabakh Liberation is starting a series of anti-Armenia, anti-Karabakh, anti-OSCE and, in fact, anti-international actions.

The 525th daily reports OKL leader Akif Nagi to say that this is to prevent the obvious attempts to give Karabakh and Lachin to Armenia as a concession. Azerbaijan's positions are growing weaker and this requires urgent actions.

Nagi says that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline will be launched this year. The world powers are interested in its full security and will do their best to resolve the Karabakh conflict by any means.

Nagi slates the OSCE Minsk Group and says that no international organization has so far taken serious steps to solve the problem and all of them though indirectly but have supported Armenia and claimed concessions from Azerbaijan.

Nagi does not say what else - besides the above actions - OKL is going to do to prevent this situation.
