What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

    'Struggle Against PKK Should Start'
By Cumali Onal, Sharm al Sheikh
    Published: Monday, May 22, 2006

Turkish Prime Minster Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that a more efficient struggle against the PKK (Kurdish Workers’ Party) should start as soon as a new government is established in Iraq.

In Sharm al Sheikh, for the World Economic Forum Meeting in Egypt, Erdogan met with US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick.

The political developments in Iraq, Kerkuk’s (Kirkuk) status and Iran’s nuclear studies were discussed during the meeting.

Erdogan also said Turkey wants peaceful nuclear power, and highlighted that negotiations for this still continue.

Prime Minster Erdogan participated in the mutual meetings as part of the World Economic Forum.

Reportedly Erdogan met with US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick and requested that with the establishment of the new government in Iraq a stronger policy against the existence of the PKK in Northern Iraq should be implemented.

The US had previously stipulated that the establishment of a government in Iraq was vital for the struggle against the PKK.

Reportedly Erdogan criticized the existence of only one Turkmen Minister in the crowded cabinet; adding this was not fair representation.

Erdogan expressed Turkey’s sensitivity regarding Kirkuk’s final status and emphasized the ongoing Kurdish migration to the region prior to the referendum in 2007, which will determine Kirkuk’s status.

It is revealed that Zoellick demanded help from Turkey in the frame of Iran’s nuclear studies and informed Erdogan about the structure of the new government in Iraq during the meeting.

In another security incident, one soldier was injured in the eastern Turkish province of Van in land mine blast.

Four soldiers have been killed in clashes with Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) terrorists last week in the southeastern Turkish province of Sirnak. One PKK member was also killed.

The PKK terrorist organization caused the death of about 37,000 people in Turkey between 1984 and 1999. More than 4,000 soldiers, 2,000 police and about 30,000 people died in PKK terror.

      • US report: Greek Cyprus haven for PKK

US report: Greek Cyprus haven for PKK

TNA with wire dispatches / Lefkosa

Greek Cyprus is a haven for the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), said a U.S. State Department report on terrorism published on Tuesday.

The report stated that Greek Cyprus forms a transit and support hub for various organizations operating in the Eastern Mediterranean, and that the PKK/Kongra-Gel has an active presence especially in Greek Cyprus but also in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

While the report said that Greek Cyprus generally supported international efforts to block and freeze terrorist assets, implemented Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations and conformed to European Union directives on counterterrorism, it said that administration's legal framework for investigating and prosecuting terrorist-related activity "remained weak."

Although it was said that the Greek Cypriot administration had drafted legislation to restructure, modernize, and strengthen its Central Intelligence Service (KYP), it estimated that the number of PKK members on the south of the island is approximately 1,500.

Concerning the TRNC, the report said that the Turkish Cypriots couldn't sign treaties, international conventions and protocols, or other international agreements because they aren't recognized by the international community.

"The area administered by the Turkish Cypriots lacked the legal and institutional framework necessary to combat money laundering and terrorist financing effectively," it added.

Although the report described the Green Line as a "relatively porous" area for terrorists, it also said that the large Turkish troop presence in the north acted as a deterrent against PKK/ Kongra-Gel activity in the region.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist group by the U.S. and is on its list of terrorist organizations.

          • Turkey shells Iraqi Kurds

            June 2, 2006

            UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL

Turkey's military remains concerned about Kurdish insurgent activity in neighboring Iraq.

On Thursday the Turkish military shelled Iraq's Kurdistan region. The artillery barrage wounded a shepherd and killed seven of his flock.

The barrage came a day after a group of Kurdish and American officials, including a U.S. general, inspected Iraqi Kurdistan for evidence of purported illegal cross-border Turkish military operations.

Adnkronos International news agency reported June 1 that Kurdish sources in Zakho, near the Iraq-Turkey border, said the Kurdish-U.S. team inspected the Afakawiz border region, which Iraqi Kurds charge that Turkey repeatedly shells.

Turkey asserts that Iraqi Kurds covertly allow the separatist Kurdish Worker Party to base themselves there.

The Kurdish Worker Party (PKK) has been fighting Turkey for more than two decades in its struggle to establish a separatist Kurdish state. The PKK is classified as a terrorist group in many countries.

            • TAK Claim Responsibility for Manavgat Explosion

TAK Claim Responsibility for Manavgat Explosion
              By Cihan News Agency
              Published: Wednesday, June 28, 2006

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), a terrorist group linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), has claimed responsibility for last Sunday's explosion in Manavgat in a telephone call to the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency. Firat stated that the caller also warned tourists not to come to Turkey.

However, a spokeswoman for the Antalya Governor's Office denied the claims insisting that the explosion was caused by a gas canister.

Turkish daily newspaper Vatan claimed in its Tuesday edition that last Sunday's deadly explosion near the southern Turkish resort town of Manavgat was caused by a bomb and not by a gas canister as reported in the aftermath of the blast.

A total of four people were killed and 24 injured in Sunday evening's explosion in the Manavgat district in the Antalya province. The blast occurred in a garden restaurant near the town of Sarilar close to Manavgat waterfall, around 100 km to the east of the city of Antalya. A Russian, a Hungarian, a Norwegian and a Turk were killed in the explosion.

A statement issued by the Manavgat District Governor's Office on Monday had said that the incident was due to the explosion of a gas canister.

The Vatan report stated that security cameras at the scene had recorded images of a man placing a package in a rubbish container which exploded after an interval of 20 minutes. The man was said to be in the company of another man and a woman. Vatan also says that parts of an explosive device are being tested by a forensic laboratory and that the images of the three suspects packed up by the security cameras are being compared with photos in police archives.

The Turkish police authorities have not made any comment regarding the Vatan claims.

Terrorist organizations including the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have targeted resort areas in Turkey in the past in attempts to damage Turkey's tourism industry.

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) have claims several bomb attacks in Turkey in the past, including the explosion on 3 June in the Mediterranean port city of Mersin which left 13 people injured. TAK also claimed that they were responsible for the huge fire which broke out at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport in the month of May this year. Turkish security authorities have made no comment on this latter claim.

Foreign tourist arrivals in Turkey in May this year were down 17% on the previous year.

Several factors are thought to have contributed to the decrease in this year's tourist arrivals in Turkey. These include the controversy surrounding the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in the Western media, the murder of an Italian priest in the Black Sea city of Trabzon in February, the violent incidents at last year's Turkey-Switzerland match in Istanbul, the fall in prices in Greece, and the active steps taken by Croatia and Bulgaria to promote their tourism industries. The 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany are also suspected of having a negative effect on the number of tourist numbers coming to Turkey.

Turkey's total tourism revenues for 2005 reached 18.1 billion dollars. Despite the lower-than-expected figures so far this year, the Turkish authorities are still hoping that the 20 billion mark will be exceeded by the end of December.
