If the citizens of EU states were to democratically vote on Turkish membership, Turkey would have no chance to enter the EU. The Greek government has been pushing for Turkish membership.
    Okay.

I've analized {perhaps overanalized it} but it might be a combination of a few different reasons:

It will put Turkey's policies/actions under a microscope in the future. Turkey can react to this by either liberalizing thus becoming a better and more peaceful neighbor or Turkey can take every setback as an insult and further alienate themselves from the Europeans. The Greeks see this as a win-win. I think even many Turks see Greek support as a trap. Most European people/governments do not want them as a member yet it cannot be denied that the process, even if it results in their eventual denial into the EU, has created many positive changes. It as forced Turkey to look in the miror, much as I think Genocide Recognition efforts force them to do even if we do not always agree with the reaction.

I agree. In the end if Turkey wants to enter the EU it will have to take up democratic standards, that means allowing free discussion of the Armenian Genocide, an effective death warrant for the current Turkish government.
