  • Re: Reviews & Ratings

In case you asked because you'd like to hearing my thoughts, here's a brief review.

The Descendants attempts and succeeds in doing what other films simply cannot. The film finds an effective balance between two extremes of drama (tearjerker) and comedy (absurdism), but keeps a solid form in the hands of its writer and director Alexander Payne. While his last film, Sideways felt more like a complete picture in my eyes and the locale of its story was much more intriguing (despite being a few hours away from me), The Descendants features a much more balanced performance from its male protagonist, George Clooney, whose character changes as abruptly as the film's tones. It's not the best film I've seen this year, but definitely one that has left some form of impression. I think I might be too close to the subject material with this one, after recently having gone through a death in the family, and while I don't agree the film captures life as it is in those tragic moments, the film is honest and earnest in its portrayal of human emotion.

Yes, I wanted feedback. I wanted to know if it's well done and worth seeing. Sounds like it is; thanks!

        Insidious

        8.5/10

It scared the piss out of me, I usually have a large tolerance for horror, but this really did have lovely cinematography, also very little gore, it was more psychological. Around the last 15 minutes it goes slightly downhill, although the there are scenes that make you jump, the epliogue was predictable though.

        For the background story :

A family move into a house, their son sees something in the attic, bumps his head and goes into a semi-coma for three months which can't be explained by doctors.
After a while supernatural events start to occur (voices, and...more, watch the damn movie, I don't do spoilers) which in turn means what happened to their son might be triggered due to occult reasons. They decide to move...and the hauntings continue.

The director is James Wan (of Saw fame) along with Leigh Whannell (writer of Saw and Dead Silence), also produced by Oren Peli (maker of Paranormal Activity, which I found lame, but meh)

Is it too soon for top ten lists for the year?

Siggie and Pedro, have you guys seen enough films from this year to contribute to such a list or should I take my dorkiness elsewhere?

I haven't seen 10 this year even. I'm doing better, but not well enough to do that. I would be a consumer of said list though.

I haven't seen very many movies this year. Of those I've seen, Bridesmaids is the only one I really liked.

Oh, and I liked that hot mess Insidious too! LOL, the gas mask!

Hmm, they're mostly horror, and some of them aren't THAT new (they stretch from the 60s to 2011 releases), but I only got to see them now. I did see some other decent movies this year though as well that were released circa 2011. Give me a little bit of a think and I'll see if I can come up with a list for recently released movies that I did indeed feel topped the best of the year. It's somewhere in my head between the music, studies...and the voices (do you hear them too?)

A simple no would have sufficed.
