Dusken pretty much hit the nail on the head. Pardon the blatant simplicity, but...people are stupid! I don't know if it's something in the water, or perhaps preservatives, but for some reason, it hurts their...uhhh..."kiwi brain" ()...for most people to think. They want simple answers, handed to them on a cardboard platter, and served with a side of plastic individuality. Telling these people to come to grips with their own existance is like asking them to actually use a turn signal before they slam on their brakes to make a turn. Everything they do or say has to be sold to them. Their very personalities, purchased at the local mall. "Get a life! They sell them at your local Gap!"
Mere puppets for society, the grand puppeteer. Oh, and no. Music as an art form is never coming back. Even if it did, the "artists" would be of the psuedo variety, much like everything else being offered today, only being "artsy" because it would be the current trend at the moment, so posers would be pretending to have a clue about art and music.

But great musicians will continue to exist, i like to believe that. there are great musicians all over the place even today... unfortunately, a lot of them end up playing much crappier music than they're capable of just so that they could get some commercial success & make big bucks (the best example i could think of: Carlos Santana. he's a fantastic musician, listen to his stuff from the late 60's... & now he's producing disposable crap & loving it) but many of these great musicians decide to keep their integrity & make good music, release albums under less popular record labels, make a few bucks (hopefully enough to get by comfortably) & pay their taxes just like everybody else. personally, i'm aspiring to be among the latter.

Just accept the fact that the major record companies don't want to sign any bands with good songwriting, realize that the great music is out there, and that you will never see it on MTV or whatever, and find it yourself.
Record labels don't want new, interesting bands. They want the same old crap, because that's the easiest to market, easiest to sell, and it can be used as background music. Of course, there are good bands that are on record labels (Tea Party, System Of A Down), but they are generally the exception to the rule.
