Ok, here's one of my cars. Well...this isn't my actual car, but I have a '90 just like this model...except...in dier need of restoration.
They started as a Grand Prix SE, and were taken over to ASC for the body kit and power moonroof (if it got that option), and then down the street to McLaren (yes...the same McLaren that does the F1) to have it converted to the turbo package.
Pontiac sold it for a base price of nearly $25K. As you can see from the photos of the interior, there really wasn't much to add on/desire as far as amenities go. It was WAY ahead of it's time, as many Pontiacs from that era were. The only options were leather, moonroof and a CD player (in '90), which brought the price tag up to $27K. Now considering you could buy a NEW Grand Prix for around that much today, that was a hell of a lot of money for a GP in '89/'90. There has been no official set numbers established for production, but they've been narrowed down to between 2,000 and 2,750 each year for their 2 year run, with most agreeing on 1,000 of the 4-door STE versions getting the turbo in '90 only (left over parts?). I've got one of the STEs in white, as well. The 4-door Turbo STEs (referred to as TSTEs by owners) only came in white and maroon, with key colored wheels. The 2-door Turbo Grand Prix' (referred to as TGPs with owners) only came in black or red with gold trim, with about 85% of them getting the tan interior, and the rest of the handfull receiving the light grey. I have a complete, very rare dark charcoal grey leather interior that I will be putting in mine. I don't believe this has been done before. I got locked in a junkyard trying to get it
(long story, and ironically enough, that car in the auction is in the same town as the yard I got locked into), but damn it, I have it! I'll be getting the rims powder coated gunmetal grey to match the interior, as well as the front grill and any Pontiac emblems embeded in the front and rear bumpers. Then comes the red "ASC/McLaren Turbo" custom windshield decal.
But I've got a loooong road ahead before I start worrying about cosmetic stuff. So yeah...there you have it. DAMN I wish mine looked as nice as the one in those photos. That thing is like showroom new!! I should go take a look at it before the winner picks it up. I'll probably never see one that nice again.
