As the Iranian authorities warned the opposition on Tuesday that they would tolerate no further protests over the disputed June 12 presidential elections, a report emerged of the hangings of six supporters of defeated candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.
Speaking after Iran's top legislative body upheld the election victory of incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sources in Iran told this reporter in a telephone interview that the hangings took place in the holy city of Mashhad on Monday. There was no independent confirmation of the report.
Underlining the climate of fear among direct and even indirect supporters of Mousavi's campaign for the election to be annulled, the sources also reported that a prominent cleric gave a speech to opposition protesters in Teheran earlier this week in which he publicly acknowledged that the very act of speaking at the gathering would likely cost him his life.
"Ayatollah Hadi Gafouri said that the Imam [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini] never wanted [current supreme Leader] Ali Khamenei to succeed him. He even went to say that the Islamic republic died the day the Imam did," one source said.
On Monday, witnesses said thousands of policemen and Basij militiamen carrying batons were deployed in Teheran's main squares to prevent any recurrence of the opposition protests. Drivers who so much as shouted "Allahu Akbar" or beeped their horns had their windows smashed by the Basiji and riot police.
Latest info I have from friends there is that whatever we hear here, it is hundred times worse in Tehran. A small example would be if you broke your arm you DO NOT go to the hospital because you could well be arrested without treatment taken to jail and tortured thinking you were a protester.

Iran 'disqualifies' EU from talks
Britain has denied allegations of involvement in the Iranian riots
The EU is no longer qualified to take part in talks on Iran's nuclear programme, a top Iranian official says.
Maj Gen Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran's top military officer, accused the EU of interfering in riots which followed the disputed Iranian elections last month.
Until the EU apologised for this "huge mistake", he said, it had no right to take part in the negotiations.
The EU has yet to comment, but earlier urged Iran to avoid conflict with the international community.

KanadaHye, you might know already but Obama has also indicated that his offer for diplomacy and talks with Iran is no longer valid.

Israel's foreign ministry has accused France of unacceptable meddling in its internal affairs over a reported comment by President Nicolas Sarkozy.
He was quoted by Israeli TV calling for Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who leads a far-right party, to be sacked.
The plea, which has not been confirmed nor denied by officials, was allegedly made during a meeting with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu last week.
Israeli Arab leaders have accused the foreign minister of anti-Arab racism.
Ahmed Tibi, a member of the Israeli parliament for the United Arab List, welcomed President Sarkozy's comments, saying: "The international community has started to absorb the danger of the fascism" coming from Mr Lieberman.
However, the deputy leader of Mr Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu party called the comments "grave and unacceptable".
Mr Lieberman's office said: "If this report is correct then this is an unacceptable interference in internal Israeli affairs."
Mr Netanyahu's office issued a statement saying the PM voiced his "full confidence" in Mr Lieberman during a meeting with ambassadors from European Union countries.
"You need to get rid of this man... You need to remove him from this position"
Mr Sarkozy reportedly said, to which Mr Netanyahu replied that "in private [Mr Lieberman] is pragmatic".

A senior Iranian diplomat on Wednesday drew parallels between the dramatic post-election events in Iran and Armenia, saying that they were provoked by Western powers.
The two neighboring states were thrust into turmoil by presidential elections that sparked opposition allegations of fraud and massive anti-government demonstrations. Authorities in both states resorted to lethal force and mass arrests of opposition supporters to quell the protests.
Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, Seyed Ali Saghaeyan, reiterated his government’s allegations that the worst street unrest in Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution was fomented by Western powers and the United States and Britain in particular. “The United States and Britain tried to interfere but that didn’t work,” he said. “Everything has been sorted out.”
While noting that the events in Armenia and Iran are “not comparable,” Saghaeyan claimed that the West also had a hand in the unrest that followed the Armenian presidential election of February 2008. “In my personal view, the events that occurred in Armenia on March 1 last year stemmed from the West’s efforts to organize and finance revolutions in former Soviet republics,” he told a news conference. “We saw examples of that in Georgia and Kyrgyzstan. Fortunately, that was thwarted thanks to clever steps taken by Armenia’s leaders.”
Some Armenian pro-government politicians made similar claims last year. The foreign conspiracy theory was incorporated, at least initially, into the official criminal investigation into what the Armenian government called an opposition attempt to stage a coup d’etat. The Special Investigative Service (SIS), a law-enforcement agency leading the probe, claimed that opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosian’s bid for regime change was “organized by one center” and “financed from abroad.”
Shortly after the March 2008 violence, the SIS chief Andranik Mirzoyan instructed regional prosecutors to round up participants of the post-election demonstrations in Yerevan and find out “what was said at the rallies about the assistance from foreign states” and “whether rally participants spoke about ending Russia’s presence in Armenia.”
President Serzh Sarkisian was among foreign leaders who congratulated his Iranian counterpart Mahmud Ahmadinejad on the latter’s disputed reelection. The two men agreed to press ahead with more large-scale Armenian-Iranian projects during Sarkisian’s April visit to Tehran. Those include the construction of a railway connecting the two countries and a big hydro-electric plant.
Saghayean said that the turmoil in Iran will not reflect negatively on the implementation of those projects.

It's kinda pathetic blaming the west for it, its Khomeni and Achminajad's fault this happened. They can't run an election properly and they got their desert.
They are just trying to use nationalism and paranoia to keep the situation under control now, which is obviously failing.
