This is another fantasy the Israeli military has going. Lebanon is a peaceful nation that rarely if ever attacks its neighbours but the Israeli military cant stand a prosperous democracy on Israel's border. True that Hezbollah sympathises with the Palestinians and has a private army, but they are Lebanonise first and would not attack Israel unless Lebanon is attacked. They want every Muslim majority nation to be an evil, demonic entity which is why they hate Lebanon, they cant demonise it (only Hezbollah).

You got to be kidding me, those monster size Scuds wont even fit through the streets of Lebanon, and where was MOSAD and the Israeli UAVs all this time.........Scuds are not easy to hide.

This must be a distraction from their refusal to get back on the peace talks and halt the constructions in East Jerusalem, which now more than ever they are under pressure from Washington and the Arab world.

European Je_ws sign petition critical of Israel

PARIS -- More than 3,000 European Je_ws, including prominent intellectuals, have signed a petition speaking out against Israeli settlement policies and warning that systematic support for the Israeli government is dangerous.

The petition's signatories include French philosophers Bernard-Henri Levy and Alain Finkielkraut as well as Daniel Cohn-Bendit, a Greens leader in the European Parliament.

Backers - who compare their goals to those of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel Je_wish lobbying group in the U.S. - plan to present their position at a news conference at the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday.

Supporters hope to build a European movement that is both "committed to the state of Israel and critical of the current choices of its government."

Israeli columnist Yossi Sarid, a former Cabinet minister identified with Israel's dovish peace movement, praised the initiative in an op-ed published in the Haaretz daily Sunday.

"These are people who seize every opportunity to defend Israel publicly and remain faithful to it," he wrote. "But even their patience is running out and their hearts are filled with sincere concern."

Israel's Foreign Ministry declined to comment because the initiative is not government-sponsored.

Many signatories are from France, where the petition has received much press coverage. France's Je_wish community has hotly debated the petition, entitled "Call for Reason." The president of France's leading Je_wish association, CRIF, declined to sign, saying he objected to some of its language and its tone.

"Do Israelis need the Je_wish Diaspora to know what is 'the right' decision, what should be the borders of a country that their sons and daughters are protecting?" Richard Prasquier wrote in Le Figaro newspaper.

The petition, online at http://www.jcall.eu , says Israel faces a threat in the "occupation and the continuing pursuit of settlements in the West Bank and in the Arab districts of East Jerusalem.

"These policies are morally and politically wrong and feed the unacceptable delegitimization process that Israel currently faces abroad," it says.

It adds that "systematic support of Israeli government policy is dangerous and does not serve the true interests of the state of Israel."

Israeli political figure, Rabi Avraam Shmulevic commented on the
issues concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia
and Azerbaijan.

In particular, he said that the current "frozen" phase of the conflict
is good for everyone, except for Azerbaijan. According to him, both
the West, and Russia took the neutral position, which leads to these
lands kept within Armenia.

"The possibility of military solving the conflict is rather small
right now. However, it exists", Shmulevic said.

He also pointed out that foreign oil companies in Azerbaijan will
be against the war, since the damaged stabilility of the region
contradicts their own interests. Touching upon the question,
whether Israel will provide help to Azerbaijan in case of war,
Israeli politician said the following:

"As we know, at the present time, the relations between Azerbaijan
and Israel are quite warm, and both countries pay special attention
to this relationship. Azerbaijan is seen as a stable country in the
region. And, also, relations between Azerbaijan and Jerusalem are
much more close than relations between Jerusalem and Yerevan. And
Israel will not go on developing other relations, if they could harm
Azerbaijani-Israeli relations. So, in case if Azerbaijan gets attacked,
Israel without a doubt will provide its help".

And, in particular respond affirmatively to Azerbaijan either when it
cooperates with the United States in these areas or demonstrates that
a Muslim nation both can and should have positive relations with the
State of Israel', said US Congressman Daniel B. Maffei in his remarks
on `Azerbaijan and Israel: Good friends under siege from Iran', in
Washington DC, APA's Washington correspondent reports.

He pointed out that, `Unfortunately, good relations between the State
of Israel and Muslim nations are the exception rather than the rule.
Given this situation, it would be surprising to most to learn that one
of Israel's strongest friends in the region is Azerbaijan, a former
Soviet Republic, with over a 90 percent Shi'ite population that has
adopted a secular style completely opposed to Iran's sectarian
government. Azerbaijan has chosen a very different path from that of
its southern neighbor, even though there are over 20 million ethnic
Azeris living in Iran, including the Grand Ayatollah himself, who is
of Azeri descent'.

According to the Congressman, one possible explanation for
Azerbaijan's positive relationship with Israel is the presence of a
strong xxxish community in Azerbaijan for over 2,500 years. `By all
accounts, these Azeri xxxs have always been well treated and never
subject to the types of discrimination and hostility that confronted
xxxs, not just in Muslim nations, but the Christian nations of
Europe'.

`On a political front, Israel and Azerbaijan cooperate closely on
security issues. Israel supplies significant military equipment to
Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan provides Israel with valuable intelligence
support, particularly regarding Iran. The two nations also work
together to combat the growth of radical Islam.
The close political, cultural, economic and security relations between
Israel and a majority Shi'a but secular Azerbaijan present a model
that needs to be encouraged, cultivated and spread throughout the
Muslim world. However, this will not happen by itself, and, unless the
United States begins to focus more on Azerbaijan's importance in the
region, the very existence of this positive Azeri-Israeli relationship
could be put in jeopardy', - he added.

I think it is comical how Isreal is so hung up on being a part of europe even when it is in the heart of the middleeast. They play soccer in the european league and participate in eurovision yet Syria is closer to europe then they are. Isreal shares no values with europe yet it is allowed to participate in it.
