Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!


2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

    This happened today at a soccer field not too far from where I work. The lightning struck outside the area of the reported storm.

    Two young boys and the mother of one of them were rushed to hospital after lightning struck a soccer field in Brampton, Ont., on Wednesday afternoon.

    The boys, aged four and six, were in critical condition in the Hospital for Sick Children in downtown Toronto, while the mother was in stable condition at Brampton Civic Hospital, said hospital spokesman Todd Leach.

    The trio were struck on a soccer field at Centennial Park, near Queen Street East and Main Street at about 2:20 p.m.

    The park is in Allan Hughes's backyard and he ran out to try to help after the incident.

    "[It] was just the worst, terrifying thing I've ever seen," a visibly distraught Hughes told CBC who tried to do CPR on one of the boys. "He was lying there not moving, his eyes wide open."

    The boys' clothes had been shredded off due to the impact of the lightning strike, Hughes said.

    Although there was a 40 to 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the Toronto area Wednesday, there were no specific watches or warnings issued for Brampton, west of Toronto, according to CBC meteorologist Nick Czernkovich.

    "This particular thunderstorm didn't meet the warning criteria, but it doesn't mean it couldn't be dangerous," said Czernkovich. "Every thunderstorm can be dangerous and should be treated with caution."

    The No. 1 safety tip is to get indoors, he added.

    A thunderstorm was reported at Pearson International Airport just east of Brampton at 1:46 p.m. ET, the same storm that caused the lightning.

    I got hit by lightning but it was indirectly. I was connecting my boat trailor to my car in a rainstorm when lightning struck the other side of my trailor, the surge rushed through the metal of the trailor which i was holding and i got zapped, i guess i was lucky it was a indirect hit but it still felt very strong, took me a few minutes to gather myself but i was ok.

      This was indirect too, left a hole in the ground but blew everyone in the vicinity off their feet.

          Science still can't explain everything about lightning.

          Before science, many people believed that the gods were responsible for natural events like thunder and lightning, but then as people gained more scientific knowledge, the unknowns that they attributed to the gods became fewer, until eventually, as some people now believe, there is nothing left in nature for a god to explain.

          The flaw in this argument is that science might never be able to explain why the universe exists. And science might never be able to disprove the idea that the evolution of intelligent life had some kind of cosmic purpose. These 'higher mysteries' will probably always be open to speculation, and so no matter how much knowledge we acquire, there will probably always be a gap in our knowledge that can be filled by a religious explanation. And because of the sense of common purpose that religion can inspire, such explanations will probably always be dominant.

          Judging by the continued popularity of religion around the world today, it is doubtful whether the majority of people would ever accept the idea that our world has no true purpose in nature. They will probably always want to believe that their lives have some kind of cosmic significance and that humankind has some special relationship to the forces that created the universe.

          Without any rational explanation for our existence that gives people a sense of purpose and meaning, they will continue to follow the irrational teachings of their ancient religious scriptures, and they will continue to be manipulated by their traditional religious institutions. They will continue to reject the theory of evolution because their religious leaders will keep telling them that evolution is a godless philosophy, and they will continue to be doubtful of scientific explanations because atheist academics will keep telling them that life is essentially absurd and meaningless.

          Due to the popular desire for cosmic purpose and the unarguable possibility that there might be one, religious explanations will probably always exist, and so religious persuasion will probably always have an enormous influence over the political power struggle. However, there is no good reason to continue to tolerate political and religious extremism. The opportunity now exists for us to dispel the kinds of myths that continue to create opportunities for extremists to manipulate believers.

          Rather than complaining about the god of the gaps, we now have the knowledge and freedom to develop a purposeful progressive scientific philosophy to fill the gap and displace the traditional religious myths by leaving no uncertainties that can be exploited by conservative anti-science opportunists.


          I for one don't believe that my parents left a politically turmoil Turkey to give me a better future just to live a life that is absurd and meaningless.

            Just because we do not yet know everything there is to know about something does not make it supernatural.

                This is confusing. The excerpt you just posted which favours scientific explanation over any religious/ metaphysical 'myths' contradicts clearly the point -namely science being incapable of explaining everything- you're trying to get across.

                Are you serious? Wouldn't living in Turkey be more absurd for you as an 'Armenian'? What's more if you have an absurd, meaningless life in Canada, now that you are conscious about it you should search for the reasons (at least part of it) within yourself and make a change on a 'personal' level at best.

                  You have no idea what supernatural means do you?

                  Lightning occurs in this natural world and observed, studied, predicted, explained and recreated. That means it is NOT supernatural.

                    No, the point is that both science and religion have a political force behind the assertions they make. Once people are free of the manipulation and lies, they can begin to think on their own without blindly believing everything they hear by "experts" in the media.

                    Sometimes I wonder how would have my life been different had I grew up in Turkey. Would I still be alive? Would I have decided to leave on my own had I become of age? Would I have experienced the same racism that I experienced among Canadians growing up? There are so many different ways my life could have turned out.

                    I don't need to make any changes on a 'personal' level. My problem is with my 'peers' who have sold themselves out to western culture. Many have become self centered and have put material/money/status over human/friendship. Much like the lifestyle that the rest of the "civilized" world is adopting.
