(Oh, but then, again, some of us are allergic to "popular" culture, even if it is of the caliber of a show like Mad Men or The Wire.)

My belief is that life is short. There is no such thing as reward or punishment after this life. Therefore, live a good life and whenever possible, help others to do the same. Competition is such a waste of time, IMO.
