Well, death has been around for a long time, as far back as I can remember, and it has been the driving for humans in all that we do, to leave something behind to live past our lifetimes and extend our accomplishments and ideas into the future. Of course death scares us so that's why we make up stuff like religion and philosophy and ideologies to give us something to do while we wait for death.

On a side note, dead bodies and the smell of rotting flesh can be a fetish for some and a graveyard is a good way of finding sexual partners!
