No it doesn't, it means that the higher you score, the more you are able to exterior-wise-/seemingly, adapt to your surroundings, and people, in order to benefit from the situation. It does not mean you actually change. However, being on either side of the extremes is not favorable.

I don't see why that would make someone fake; it just shows a more malleable personality. If you score low, you probably don't care so much whether or not you fit in and you'll just be yourself whether or not it works to your benefit.

Everyone wants their own benefit, and everyone cares to obtain it.
It's not a choice. If it were a choice, everyone would be in the 90's.
the objective is not to fit in, the objective is to gain benefit.
