No it doesn't, it means that the higher you score, the more you are able to exterior-wise-/seemingly, adapt to your surroundings, and people, in order to benefit from the situation. It does not mean you actually change. However, being on either side of the extremes is not favorable.

Are you a high or low self-monitor? Take this personality test to find out how much you change your personality in different contexts. Low self monitors tend to use inner beliefs and values in deciding how to behave, while high self monitors tend to monitor their surroundings and change their behavior to fit in.
Sounds like the higher you score, the better you are at behaving differently in a given context so that you will better fit in. I don't see why that would make someone fake; it just shows a more malleable personality. If you score low, you probably don't care so much whether or not you fit in and you'll just be yourself whether or not it works to your benefit.

      I scored a 44.

Agreed, however if you score low- its not that you don't care so much whether or not you fit in, and that you'll just be yourself whether or not it works to your benefit, it's that you are not able to "fit in", in a given situation beacuse your persoanlity will not let you bend to the others' eyes.

Everyone wants their own benefit, and everyone cares to obtain it.

It's not a choice. If it were a choice, everyone would be in the 90's.

the objective is not to fit in, the objective is to gain benefit.
