Or even determining physical characteristics. What is the difference between using plastic surgery to alter one’s appearance, and using bioengineering to alter one’s appearance?
The difference is that gene manipulations result in a change of genotype, whereas plastic surgery results in a change of phenotype. A change in genotype can have long term affects, beyond the first generation.

Still, I see no crucial harm, as long as there are strict regulations.

Though I understand that it can easily spin out of conrol.

And who is going to create/control those regulations? Scary thought if it falls into the wrong hands, isn't it?

I say that we leave it to nature.

Imagine cloning Hitler. Wow then imagine many Hitlers. Then imagine having sex with one of those clones.

Yes, very scary thought. That's the reason why a lot of people are against it. There's too much at risk compared to/despite the positive sides, so they figure it's easier not to deal with it at all.

Though using bioengineering to replace defective genes with healthy ones seems to have no negative setbacks that I can think of.

Oh no, then future generations will be smarter and better-looking, too. How terrible.

k.instead of editing my posts ansewr my questions that i raised....

...how are they going to create a true continuity of consciousness? What happens when two identical beings coexist? How do they avoid the pain and horror of repeated physical death in their little immortality scenario?Even assuming they can precisely duplicate a human being physically, what about his spiritual aspect? Will he-it have a soul? This is humanism at its most obscene. We are just masses of tissue to be manipulated and reformulated at will – our will.
