Ya low limit games you get all the beginners who are just learning and the WPT newbies who have seen it on TV and think theyre the best. Just being conscious of yourself tells me that you are already better than 50% of the players walking in there at the low limit. The lower limits you will get people calling you with weaker hands and sometimes drawing out on you but in the long run you will have the advantage if you play tight on your hand selection and aggressive on the hands you are in on the flop and post flop. I have a few books I have that I can recommend if you need it.

I'm reading Caro's Tells right now. I finished Bellin's Poker Nation a few days ago, though that wasn't really strategy. I read Lee's Low Limit sort of, but I need to revisit it.

        What do you recommend?

Caro's book of poker tells is the best book on tells although it is rarely useful. It takes a lot more than pictures to read a guy. And the pro's sometimes act like they're bluffing to make you call. Lee's low limit is a good book but here are the ones I recommend and they are the best ones and have gotten the highest praise. these are the best 4: 1. The Theory Of Poker by David Sklansky 2. Tournament Poker by David Sklansky (if you're into tournaments) 3. Hold em' for advanced players by David Sklansky (if you know the game well) 4. Pot-Limit & No-Limit Poker by Stewart Reuben and Bob Ciaffone. Also go to thepokerforum.com and click on books and you will be reviews on books.

Most of those books are not really that helpful to the average player. Improving simply takes alot of playtime/practice and you slowly start to develop your own strategies. If you play strictly with book knowledge, you will lose because there are people who use that knowledge to trap you. You just have to get good at reading each person during the course of the game. You also get better at counting odds. (Whats the percentage of the card that you need, what are the chances that your opponent can beat you, etc.)

Partypoker.com with play money will only teach you the basics of poker and not the strategies, because the people on there call with 2 7 offsuit.

Actually these books are very helpful to the average player. One of them is a little hard to understand for beginners but still not too hard. Improving takes practice true, but you need to practice the right way. No one ever plays with strictly book knowledge, it all depends on every single hand situation. How many chips the guy has, what position he is in, what kind of player he is, what tell you have on him/her, whats on the board, what are the implied odds and so forth. But I do like how you question everything and thats why you should read the theory of poker first, it will answer all your questions and more. And no one should start at Party Poker for play money because you won't be playing against opponents that will play the same way for real money but yes if you need a program to teach you the basics it's fine. Good to see we have people at least interested in poker, more specifically hold em'.

I've read most of Lee's book, Caro's Tells, and I have Slansky's Theory, though I haven't read it just yet. I've found what I have read so far to be very helpful.
