French is not as common of a language as you may think actually.

Now that the U.S. is the dominant power English is the universal language. I wonder if people will be comfortable with the idea of Mandarin becoming the next international language.

It is the most spoken language. Thats odd, I never thought of it....

The most difficult language to learn is Basque, which is spoken in northwestern Spain and southwestern France. It is not related to any other language in the world. It has an extremely complicated word structure and vocabulary....or so they say.

In fact, I have met many Americans with a strong accent who make fun of the Canadians!

They tend to make fun of us the most for our "eh" comments. Eh?

You should learn Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese, but probably Mandarin), especially now that they will be the next superpower, militarily and economically.

I agree with Anon...and I would take Chinese if I was a language person...but you should take what interests you and what you think is useful. During the Cold War, people began to study Russian more, now with terrorism people are learning Arabic more...so the only use Chinese would do for you is if you plan to do something at an international or governmental level...if not then take something that would be more practical like Spanish or French.

Some people speak french in a really ugly way here, but the French-Canadians generally have a very nice accent.

My own accent has a foreign Europeanish touch to it for some reason, which the girls here find charming , but their own accent is actually very nice, in my humble opinion.

Might be true, and not everyone will speak the same accent in the same way. But I'll stick to my initial humble opinion regarding Montreal.
Only a couple of hours away, in rural English-speaking Ottawa, I found the accent there to be very quiet and gentle and pleasant sounding. Maybe it's all just a matter of personal taste. (But I defy you to find anyone, anywhere in the world, who actually likes the Birmingham England accent! )
