Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

That? Am I supposed to feel differently? Because, based on that it's just not happenin'. Provocative + vulgar doesn't necessarily mean good. Sorry.
You didn't even bother listening to the song? That song cleverly and sarcastically exposed all the stereotypes about American minorities, on top of that, exposed the truth about the white racist movenment and its obvious cruelty and arrogance. No other form of music could've done that, no other form of music has the versatility to expose something as controversial as this so effectivelly. If it has, please name the genre, who its by, and the name of the song.

Kanye West - Roses, Hey Mamma, Drive Slow
Fort Minor - Kenji, Cigarettes, Back Home
Common - I Used to Love H.E.R (I recommend you listen to this song with the lyrics open TO THE VERY END, you'll appreciate the genre more, especially since its talking about the same thing we're discussing).
Immortal Technique - You Never Know
Louis Logic - The Idiot Gear
Nas - These Are Our Hereos, 2nd Childhood, What Goes Around

No other form of music could so vividly tell stories, and expose controversial issues as well as Hip Hop.

Please, before you bash hip hop with the mindless "the commercial xxxx sucks." - Try listening to the OTHER xxxx. Its common knowledge hip hop artists that get rich are sell outs and label slaves. REAL music fans wouldn't be quick to judge a genre based off the commercial side.

Its not hard to get ahold of "good hip hop" - if you havent heard any, you deffinitly havent looked for it.

And if we go by commercial standards:

Rock, Hip Hop, Pop, and Techno are all played out.

I hate people who judge hip hop based on "crunk" music. Ugh...

In that case I see no point of discussing this any further.

Singers (pop, blues, rock, r&b; and by all means I hardly mean all, because we know there are some that are just commercial poop) should actually demonstrate their vocal abilities, a rapper doesn't even has to have a good voice. The main requirement for a rapper is to be able to recite poetry (or what they consider poetry) fast, and preferably rhyme, the music that goes along with that is usually detached, it's not complimented, it acts as a background. For some rap "songs" music is just a vehicle that's highly engineered to decorate their empty lyrics.

Take away the beats and you have horrible lyrics that no one would care to listen to, create some synthesized sound that goes with it and everyone is bopping their heads, calling it "some good sheeit." So you see separately they are artificial and empty, together they are appeasing to the masses, who pay attention to neither, just an overall effect. I just don't like it. What can I say, I am a very pretentious listener. If the poetry is solid, it should have an impact on its own, for it its deep and moving content. Sort of like great piece of art, if it's great who cares about the frame?
I agree with a lot points you brought up. However, not all rap music is like that. Your problem is you stereotype too much. Let me ask you something, and be honest.. What rap have you heard? Commercial rap? From what you've said so far, I doubt you've heard all types of rap to form a final opinion. I won't pull the "listen to underground music for better lyrics" card on you. Instead, listen to more types of rap. I didn't read ace's posts, but I think he brought up Fort Minor, Kanye West, etc. These are rappers who basically who are much different and do something on their own. Mainstream music is basically entertainment. No one wants to hear underground rappers with multisyllable lyrics on the radio. Honestly. That's not what makes money.

But catchy beats, and catchy lyrics, sells. So you can't blame these artists. If you don't like it, good, don't turn your dial to a Hip-Hop station. But don't say you hate all of rap because of these commercials rappers. There's much more to it than that.

A lot of rappers bring a positive image with them. I have catchy songs - songs you would hear on the radio - but I never talk about a lifestyle I haven't lived. If I say it, I've done it. Yeah, I talk about girls and partying, but not to the extent where it degrades women or every other line is about drugs. I'm just being me. I make a party song, then I go out and make a very sad song. Usually, it's a sad song, though. And don't take things rappers say seriously. We say it for the sake of a song. When rappers say something, they just say it.

One-Way, whats is your music about mostly? Is it about your life, your family or life in general that other people can relate too?
My music is mostly about my life and the things I saw growing up. The struggle I went through with my family, something a lot of people may understand and relate to. However, I do have the occassional club song. Just check out my music at www.soundclick.com/emceerecords or www.myspace.com/oneway23.

My song "Ride Tonight" is a party song which got me a good enough buzz in my city. People have been playing it at parties and it got me more recognized. That's why I need party songs, usually.

"When I Think Back" is one of my songs talking about my family struggle. "Today Is The Day" is one of my songs talking about leaving high school and leaving behind the memories. "Just Friends" is my song talking about girl problems, how some girls see me as just a friend and nothing me.

So you see, I just rap about what I've been through. My album is gonna be different though, something insane.

          Re: "Different" By One-Way

I look for a unique and strong voice in songs in addition to the lyrics. Despite the fact that words can be moving and profound if the music and the voice are generic or week my attention is lost. I appreciate Bob Dylan for his poetry but I don't consider him a good singer. I just can't listen to his music for too long. Again, this is a very subjective reply.

I think my voice works well in my music. In the genre I have chosen, if your voice, "flow", doesn't sound right - it's impossible to listen to. A lot of people like my voice, and not to be xxxxy, but I agree. I have a lot of things I need to work on, but my voice usually works well on my songs.
