When I lived in Tennessee there was a ‘blizzard’ () of about nine inches of snow. That basically shut down everything (except a few of the gas stations) for an entire week. One of my roommates had a 4x4 pathfinder and chains, so we could get around without too much trouble (and give rides to the poor saps who tried to drive without winter-driving experience.)

I don’t hate cold weather. I really like the change of seasons. I love snow (and it often gets too cold to even snow in WI). But winter in Wisconsin sometimes feels too long to me without a break (that is when I start thinking about heading to southern CA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia… etc...) [None of that is conscious metaphor.]

Only 9 inches? That's not too bad. We had school cancelled for 2 days because of a little more than that, but the roads were cleared the next morning and I was able to drive around just fine. No chains and "ultra high performance" tires which aren't that great for snow.

edit- after reading Quarteria's post about the southern states. I guess, if there wasn't the means or a plan in place to clear it, it would be a problem.

Montreal can get pretty cold too, colder than -40 with windchill sometimes (and there's no confusion with -40 celsius and fahrenheit, they're about the same at that point).

You walk outside and get xxxxxslapped by the cold wind and slowly make your way to the bus stop, or your car, which is freezing cold to sit in...

Then in the summer, we can get heat waves that bring the temperature up and above 40 degrees celsies (over 100f), but the central provinces and states, especially in the prairie areas, get the most insane extremes of temperature throughout the year, at least here things tend to be a bit more humid (which also means we get a lot of snow too, but our snowplows do a good job every year, we rarely lose a day of school and work).

Anyhow, that makes it eastern time here.

The Wisconsin weather can be extreme. If you can't tell the seasons by the weather, look at the plants. Spring is mostly green. Autumn is when the trees are many colors.

A few minutes ago I saw some college kids boating on the (flooded) streets near the UW-Madison campus (while I listened to Natalie Merchant sing about the weather on MMM).

Great pictures, Karoaper. I love the change of seasons here. I tend to pay attention to the beauty of nature everywhere. I like it when others begin to notice (and show others) the beauty around them.

I was driving on a back road today and saw a Fox snake in the road. I drove around it without hitting the beautiful snake. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/eek/cr...e/foxsnake.htm I quickly turned around and stopped traffic to get him/her out of the road. I couldn't see that it had been hit, but it wasn't moving very much--even while I moved it into the ditch. That reminded me of a time when I stopped to get a snapping turtle out of the median. I coaxed it with a folding stroller (because they can bite fingers off) while it bit at that furiously. I kept thinking to myself to the turtle, 'if you only understood what good I’m doing for you, you wouldn’t be so angry.'

That's one of my favorite places in WI (what an ironic name). If you ever go, take the time to hike up the bluffs.

Have you ever tried going without those, for a bit of time, though? (per Green Eggs and Ham. ) Sometimes, allergies come from lack of exposure. Maybe, you just having 'roughed it' with the right person.
