  • Fear of Death

the great Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BCE) once said:

"Why fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do?"

with all my respect to Greeks' contributions to Philosophy I'm gonna have to disagree on this one... but before discussing my reasons, I would like to hear what you guys have to say about it...

    Death is the ultimate end.

Avoiding death is the goal of each sane organism. Why? Because it is the unknown. This could branch off into all kinds of religious discussions, but just to keep it simple...death is feared because anyone who has died lost contact with the living. Therefore, unless you are dead, there's no way you could know what death is. What is unknown is always feared.

Death is the only sure thing in this life. So enjoy life, CARPE DIEM, because life is so short and so surprising that you never know ...... and as for Epicurus i totally agree with him, since he is one my favorite philosophers..... 8)

.............and be afraid of death, but be afraid of life

Animals donīt know that death is happening and continue in grazing placidly while others drop alongside them. The knowledge of death is reflective and conceptual, and animals are spared it. They live and disappear with the same thoughtlessness, a few minutes of fear, a few seconds of anguish, and it is over. But to live a whole lifetime, as humans do, with the fate of death haunting oneīs dreams..thatīs different. I think Pascalīs chilling statement fits best in this, "Men are so necessarily mad that not to be mad would amount to another form of madness". Everything that we do in our symbolic world is an attempt to deny and overcome this grotesque fate that we are burdened with.

Dont worry about death. There is nothing you can do about it. Just surf, take your mind off of things. And be a Republican, that helps too.

So in other words, you don't know that death is happening, right Mr. Mouse?

On a more serious note, how would you know that animals are spared the knowledge of inevitable death? Were you an Ass (aka donkey) in a past life?

I don't know, I'm taking a leap of faith because they are on a lower level of consciousness.
