Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

Subliminal stimuli. Interesting and also worrisome to know. It means showing a picture (or text) so fast on tv, you can not see it but your mind registers it. Today, because of an error, such a message was shown on Dutch tv, that's why I began reading about it.

    The message was;
In connection with the death of tiny little toddler, we ask you for two hours and 30 minutes intense grief and painful sexual acts. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Don't ask me what it means and why it was there. It is also known the republicans used this technique during the last commercials, in one frame you could (not) see democRATS.

    Also, these pictures have been shown on American television;
    BOMBS KEEP US FREE

    EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG

A McDonald's logo appeared for one frame during the Food Network's Iron Chef America series on January 27, 2007, leading to claims that this was an instance of subliminal advertising. The Food Network replied that it was simply a glitch.[43]
In February 2007, it was discovered that 87 Konami slot machines in Ontario (OLG) casinos displayed a brief winning hand image before the game would begin. Government officials worried that the image subliminally persuaded gamblers to continue gambling; the company claimed that the image was a coding error. The machines were removed pending a fix by Konami.[46]

Maybe we should also use this in Armenia? Some subliminal messages to make the people more patriotic and have more children?

I'm not sure how effective subliminal messaging is, I think it works much better on people who are already leaning toward what the message is trying to convey. Hypnosis works in the same way.

I think it's a long term process, if a child reads such messages over a period of years, it will have it's effect.

Yes, I think if done over many years it will have an effect. However, short term it is not nearly as harmful and again is based on a person's susceptability to subliminal stimuli.

In 2007, to mark the 50th anniversary of James Vicary's original experiment, it was recreated at the International Brand Marketing Conference MARKA 2007. As part of the "Hypnosis, subconscious triggers and branding" presentation 1,400 delegates watched part of the opening credits of the film Picnic that was used in the original experiment. They were exposed to 30 subliminal cuts over a 90-second period. When asked to choose one of two fictional brands, Delta and Theta, 81% of the delegates picked the brand suggested by the subliminal cuts, Delta.[47] Although, Delta is also a real brand.
I think it really has an effect, also on short-term. I have also spoken a psychologist on this matter. I did a little test myself, I was whispering "tennis", "tennis", next to a friend of mine, without him noticing. Afterwards, I said draw something on a piece of paper, after I had drawn something on a piece of paper. He had drawn a tennis racket, which was exactly the same of what I had drawn. He was in shock. I never told him I was whispering "tennis", "tennis".

I have heard this ( in the UK, a few years ago) being used in some department stores to encourage people to spend more.
It was mixed with a background music.
There was a public outcry. It was “stopped”.

Do not know how effective it was.

Politics is not about the pursuit of morality nor what's right or wrong
Its about self interest at personal and national level often at odds with the above.
Great politicians pursue the National interest and small politicians personal interests

              Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subliminal_stimuli

Been through this literature and cover the topic in my class: Subliminal priming can produce a very short-lived effect (like primes do...), but it doesn't change attitudes. No worries.

Incidentally, most of what people think of when they think of subliminal messages, isn't even subliminal. Subliminal, by definition, requires that the stimulus be below the threshold of perception.

I skimmed the article, and it does mention the very short effect, the lack of effects beyond placebo, and even the history, including Vicary who pretty much started the public outcry about subliminal advertising with his fraudulent claims.

                Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subliminal_stimuli

Patriotism - intended as the will to spend one's energies for the good of the nation - is a way more complex behaviour than just, say, wave a flag or bash a Turk, and so it can't be instilled via subliminals. Same as for raising children - which is not the same thing as just having them.
If you noticed, all the examples given are about short term, istinctive reactions - vote X/Y, buy this, play that, have sex, snarl at a face you don't like - and their efficiency when applied to complex patterns is highly disputable.

These are perceptual illusions, not subliminal stimuli.
