Process of elimination I guess. Thanks, I got it! Took me long enough.

It basically boils down to induction with the base case provided by the visitor lady. Once each inhabitant knows the base case, he or she just performs induction to arrive at his or her own eye color (by knowing everyone else's).

Anon's explained it pretty well up there .. The tricky part in the problem for me was to realize that after all the blue eyed ones die, the rest will also have to die since they'll know they have brown eyes

Although Seapahn seems to think that's a valid answer, I don't agree.

My logic was different. I was not expecting it to be correct, for I only spent a couple of minutes on the problem, even though Sip warned that the solution is not very simple (which my reasoning is). Here is the reasoning behind my answer (54):

1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 12, 13, 27, 28, 30, 31, 36, 37, 39, 40

Now if you look at the difference between each of the numbers (e.g. 3-1, 4-3, 9-4, etc...), this is what you get:

2 1 5 1 2 1 14 1 2 1 5 1 2 1

I guessed (rather impulsively, which is why my answer is not the real answer - I didn't expect it to be) that the pattern is the repeating sequence of 2 1 5 1 2 1 14 1. Now, by my logic, the next number would be 54, since 40+14=54.

That's why I said your answer can be considered correct. A pattern by definition is something that repeats ... what you found does in fact repeat and is supported by the first few given. But it doesn't really explain why it's small 1 2 1 and then a big jump by 5 and then a few small ones and then a big jump by 14 ... and as it turns out, the next jump is by 41 !!!!

If you want an easier one, try this:

1, 1 1, 2 1, 1 2 1 1, 1 1 1 2 2 1, 3 1 2 2 1 1, ...

Can you guys explain the reasoning behind your answers for this one, please?

I'm obviously looking at it the wrong way, since I don't see a pattern. ......
