Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

  • It is one thing to say that one BELIEVES that no diety exists. It is another that the hold of this BELIEF is equal to the practice of a religion!

You believe that you have green eyes, no? Is it a religion simply because it's a belief? Obviously not.

Agreed - but you wouldn't believe the lengths of argument I have endured with those professing that (and I paraphrase) "to believe anything in regards to existance/non-existance of diety/dieties automatically consititues (choosing a) religion" - yes it is quite silly to take such a postion I know - thus my above post....and why I must be the most religious guy on earth (for all the dieties I reject)...you too - unless of course you accept the Pink Pony et al...

      • Hey, when I was little I watched "My Little Pony" and even had an action figure! hehehe

To bring this back to religion, a religion based on My Little Pony sounds just as absurd (to a DEVOUT Atheist such as myself that is ) as an old guy in the sky with the magical ability to create the world etc

Atheism and Agnosticism are not religions. Forms of Theism are religions.

Perhaps we actually share a religion mouse - what do you think? Non - belief of Zeus. I annoint you high priest - perhaps you wish to lead a non-prayer?

*reference to my point earlier about some beliefs being better then others (or at least based upon better reasoning/evidence/insight...etc)
Beliefs being better than others are nothing more than a subjective preference, which is why I said you can't determine that by "scientific criteria".

Yes it remains that to not believe in a diety is itself another form of belief.

You misunderstand religion. Even your unbelief can itself be a religion, according to the definition of religion by Merriam-Webster

            Main Entry: re·li·gion
            Pronunciation: ri-'li-j&n
            Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English religioun, from Latin religion-, religio supernatural constraint, sanction, religious practice, perhaps from religare to restrain, tie back -- more at RELY
1 a : the state of a religious <a nun in her 20th year of religion> b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
            3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : CONSCIENTIOUSNESS
4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith

As it stands, to not have belief or to not believe in a God or Gods is itself a belief. It reminds me of Pascal's chilling reflection, "To not be mad, is itself another form of madness".

            • what is the underlying creed that atheists share (other then rejection of various stuff proposed by others)? What rituals and practices do atheists share? What common observances (holidays/sacred days etc) and such do atheists celebrate? What do atheists think about the supernatural? etc - belief (or non-belief) alone is insuficient to constitute "religion" - there is no such thing as a/the religion of atheism nor can (the vast majority of atheists) be considered as religious in any way (unless perhaps they are buddists or such...)

              • Leave Pascal alone. Your conclusion is absolutely wrong. I do not misunderstand religion by any means. You misunderstand "belief".

Your attachment to the dictionary is not very practical, dear. None of those definitions accurately define "believing that no diety exists".

It is not a personal set or institutionalized system. There is no faith involved.

I simply think it is the most likely out of all the options presented or imaginable to me. I am constantly open to learning of new options and changing my position.

Feel free to continue arguing of course, as usual.

To respond to you would mean I would have to restate the same things I've already stated. But there is a fine line between differing views, and when one ignorantly trumpets the claim of knowledge. Your misunderstanding of the definition of religion and belief combined with an adamance that lacks sense is enough to convince me that you do not understand what you talk about, although you will claim you do.
