I just made a post about this subject matter over at armenianchat.com, so I'll repost it here:
There are certain luxuries in life groups of people can afford to have. Armenians can't afford these luxuries yet seem to think they can. If a Korean and a Greek get married, it's really not THAT big of a deal. Korea and Greece are not in danger of disapearing tomorrow and in need of proud nationalistic Koreans and Greeks to defend it, and the language and cultures of those two races will be upheld whether or not SOME people decide to be "deviant" and break tradition.
Armenians on the other hand CAN'T afford this luxury. As one of the smallest minorities in the world, we must be very protective of our culture, our history, AND our genes... all things that so many of us like handing out like Candy.
It's sad that we can't be like a hive mind. The fact that we have people saying "what I do is my business and none of yours so butt out!" saddens me a bit. No, if you're Armenian then what you do is VERY much my business, and you can be held accountable to me, just as I am to be held accountable to you.
We often make fun of Jews, but despite what you might think of their past, to be completely blunt they are THE best at upholding culture out there. Practically every Jewish kid by the age of thirteen has been to Israel at least once and has learned about their culture IN their homeland. How many diasporan Armenians have EVER been to Armenia? Every Jew I know, from every economic level, buys "Israel bonds." How many Armenians, on this board, buy Armenian bonds? Almost every Jewish kid I know, whether they observe or not, at least KNOW most of the Jewish traditions and cultural rituals. How many American Armenians follow ANY traditions?
Now before this turns into a Jew-bashing and "don't compare us to them!" fest, trust me, I am not saying we should be like the Jews, not at all, so don't waste posts barking up that tree. But you have to admit... they know how to keep their next generation very well educated on who and what they are, meanwhile my cousin doesn't know ANYTHING about being Armenian other than how to speak a little and that she likes the taste of dolma.
"Armenians" are not some existential idea that will fix it self... WE are Armenians. if we want things to change in the Armenian community, then WE have to do it. *Gets into his best smokey-the-bear stance* Only YOU can prevent cultural collapse.
p.s.
I have to agree a bit with "Miss Gemini." For some reason modern Armerican Armenian men are acting a lot less noble than our heritage dictates. What's wrong with you guys? Do you want to celebrate your grandchild's 6th birthday by lake Van with it back in OUR name once again when you're an old man or not? Stop this b*tch-slapping armo pimp bullsh*t now, or I'll shoot you f*ckers myself. Only thing worse than an Azeri is a fake-Armenian that watches too much god damn B.E.T.

Let me add to this, speaking for myself of course. The reason I never went to Armenia was because of financial reasons. It had nothing to do with me loving my culture any less because I havnt gone.
Second....again im speaking for myself......My family follows a lot of Armenian traditions.
P.S...thanks for posting this HyeJinx..bc you are right on the money..especaily with the B.E.T thing..that made me laugh...cause it so true...OOooo but soo sad!
You can't hold a man down without staying down with him.

I meant it as a generalization, but I'm very happy to know you're an exception to that.
