Arranged Marriages

There is nothing wrong with being introduced to another person who your parents or other family members think is good for you as long as they let you make a choice. The problem is when they tell you that you have no other option but to marry this particular person. I think in most societies it is not a problem anymore, however, there are still rare cases when people are forced to get married, especially women. Someone earlier mentioned that even in India it does not exist. Well, I have a lot of friends from India and they all know that sooner or later their parents will find them a "perfect" someone who comes from the same cast. So arranged marriages still exist.
I personally dont think about it that much. My parents are open-minded enough to let me marry someone I chose. Of course there are some restrictions (I cant marry a Muslim, as if I would anyway?) If my parents meet someone who they think could be someone I will fall in love with and who will feel the same way about me, they will let me know and give me a chance to make a decision on my own.

well if you look at history, arranged marriages came out good. the non-arranged marriages collapsed faster. but thats a generalization, because marriages could be arranged for political or financial reasons and not because of the welfare of the child.
so, looking at the society now. i say, its better to be alone than to live in an unhappy marriage.

the hopeless condition of the marriages are a result of aggresive secularism.
if there is no commitment, bonding, sacrifice, then marriages will fall. after all whats the point of marriage if the couple could just "live" together. this has been thought 100 years ago by communists, socialists and other reformers.

I dont really think we can say that some particular type of marriage lasts longer than another. There is no pattern. So it all depends on people and circumstances

marriages that do not have spiritual connection and are made for hedonistic reasons last longer? marriage is not just any institution, its fundamental in the human existence. bonding of people should should come from love. if not, it will be unhappy and violent. just look at what a quater century of advocation of "sex for fun" and "cheating is a birthright" brought people to. thats why more and more people tend to look at marriage with a sceptical eye. there is a big question, whats the point of marriage, if people break up anyway?

Divorce rates are rediculous and growing at the same rate... I hate hearing of divorces, there is just something about it that doesnt sound right.

hmmmm it CAN save a lot of time...but I think most guys don't want to marry anyone "ugly", I bet 80% of the time, they would go ahead with the arranged marriage if the girl is hot. Personally I would go ahead with it, if the girl is fairly good looking, smart, got a good job, etc...
