- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

I thought it would be nice to pick some brains and have a discussion on global warming.

We have all heard polar ice melting, water levels rising, flood scenarios, etc.

The other day I was enjoying the nice weather and drinking beer when I noticed I was down to my last couple bottles so I ran out to the beer store to get a case (I only had a couple bottles so chill out on the drinking and driving, lol). While I was out, I thought I'd kill yergoohad terchoon with one kar and do some grocery shopping. When I got home, the beer was already cheesh warm so I tossed a couple bottles in the freezer. Unfortunately, as I was watching TV, I dosed off. The next day I went to get some ice cream out of the freezer and guess what?!?! That's right, broken beer bottles!!!

Mmmmm.... ice cold beer... oh yeah, onto my idea.

The funny thing about water is that it EXPANDS when it freezes. So if the ice bergs (which are 9/10 th's below sea level) melt due to an increase in energy wouldn't the water surrounding land actually decrease? Also, the increase in temperature would mean that more water is evaporating due to an increase in energy.

Now, there are claims that loss of the ice would also disrupt the flow of water, etc. DAMN, how many MAN MADE DAMS are there that already change or restrict the flow of water naturally around land?!?! All of Netherlands would be under sea level if it weren't for the dikes built around it. So my question is... what is all the hysteria about the day after tomorrow?

Here is a snippet from an article I found:
    Climate Change: Myths and Realities
Remarks of Eileen Claussen, President, Pew Center on Global Climate Change

Emissions Reductions: Main Street to Wall Street
    "The Climate in North America"
    New York, New York
    July 17, 2002

"How significant is this warming? The earth's temperature has always fluctuated, but ordinarily these shifts occur over the course of centuries or millennia, not decades. The 1990s were the hottest decade of the entire millennium. The last five years were among the seven hottest on record. Scientists project that over the next century average global temperature will rise two to ten degrees Fahrenheit. A ten-degree increase would be the largest swing in global temperature since the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago. In some communities, this is no longer a theoretical matter. The impacts are being felt right now. Just ask the people of Alaska, where roads are crumbling and homes are sagging as the permafrost begins to melt."

What do I find wrong with the above?

    First they state:

    1) The earth's temperature has always fluctuated, but ordinarily these shifts occur over the course of centuries or millennia, not decades.

How do they know this? Are these people as old as cave men?

    2) The 1990s were the hottest decade of the entire millennium.

Really? The entire millennium? How long have they been keeping record? The American nation is only 300 years old.

    3) The last five years were among the seven hottest on record (this was stated in 2002).

The hottest on record where? New York City? Bangladesh? Yerevan? We are now in 2009. Then I found the chart of temperature in Alaska below during the hottest five years on record which weren't the hottest 5 yrs of temperatures in Alaska from years 1996-2001.

When were the other two years?

    4) Scientists project that over the next century average global temperature will rise two to ten degrees Fahrenheit.

2 to 10 degrees? That's a huge range in terms of global temperature and an even greater prediction by the climate prophets.

    5) A ten-degree increase would be the largest swing in global temperature since the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago.

And this was determined how? First, nobody knows IF there will be a 10 degree increase in the next century let alone what the global temperature was 12,000 years ago. When is the last time the weather man was wrong? Hmmm... he still has a job.

    6) In some communities, this is no longer a theoretical matter. The impacts are being felt right now. Just ask the people of Alaska, where roads are crumbling and homes are sagging as the permafrost begins to melt."

Here is a chart showing the trend in the last 50 or so years. I don't see a millennium worth of data here. Actually, it looks more like a +/- 2 degree change every 25 years.

I would like some insight from others.

    Re: Global Warming

The data on temperature and on other things to like atnosphere composition is drawn from long round blocks of ice drilled out of permafrost. These ice cores tell us much of what you are asking about and they can be traced back a very long time. The reason why melting glcaiers will bring the water column up is because much of them are not displacing water now but when they melt all of it will find its way to the oceans, here is a good example, imagine the snow on mt ararat melting because of hotter weather, that water has to go somewhere and is not currently displacing any water at all. Now imagine all of greenland melting, antarctics, arcica,... i think you see my point. Most of the ice on greenland and antarctics and much of the rest of the arctic is on land and is not currently displacing any water in the ocean and there is solid evidence that all of it is melting at a alarming rate. Going by what you experience personaly in your area is deceptive because thats not where the potential source of the water is and the places that are the sources the ice has been melting alarmingly fast. As a matter of fact the melting ice itself hastens the melting effect further. Polar bears which are solitary animals have been observed hunting in groups to herd and kill wallrus on open beaches not ice (unheard of untill now). The evidence is as clear as day, its just not where you are looking. Ask the eskimose and they will tell you that never in their history did sea ice disapear like it does now.

I'm claiming there is no evidence of that happening beyond what you read in the media which I've found to be contradicting in many instances. It should be the Russians and the Canadians leading the research if anybody.

The evidence i just mentioned has nothing to do with the media. It was gathered, analized and published by scientists, not just a few either. The disapearing ice in the north and south is not some media hype, it is real and has been substantiated. Rusiians and canadians have the most to gain from global warming yet they will be the first ones to tell you that it is happening.

In the 1970's there was also a similar claim by scientists that the biggest danger in the next 30 years was global cooling. As always, there are two sides to every claim. I have read studies by those who study the climate (not the weather) who oppose the current general view that it is a man made change in climate. Who is right and who is wrong? Only time can tell.

            Re: Global Warming

Man made or not, the melting ice is real and could have profound consequences. No one can say exactly what will happen because to us it is a new phenomenon. Although correlation does not neccesseraly mean causation, it should be noted that the planet is warming while the levels of greenhouse gasses are rising (mostly due to men's activities). Volcanic activity, asteroid impacts, and emiisions of gas by other living things have changed the gas composition and the weather on our planet before many times, so the idea that we can effect it also is not all that hard to believe. This is not the first time climate change is attributed to the activity of organisms on earth and it probably wont be the last.

If C02 levels are the concern, then wouldn't it make sense to seed more plants and crops to help feed the world since plants convert carbon dioxide to oxygen?

There is evidence that plants do thrive in a co2 rich environment and what your saying makes sence, the problem is that by polluting, developing and consuming so much, people dont give plants the space, and environment to grow. Most of the oxigen making takes place in the oceans by algea so increasing plant life on earth cant hurt but it is the life in the ocean which has always been the main co2 converter.

If each neighborhood was to calculate their own carbon footprint (how much pollution they make driving to work, cutting the lawn, etc.) Take this information and figure out how much plantation is required to offset this and then lace their gardens and parks with a sufficient amount of plantation. I know this wouldn't work for the city slickers that live in apartments and high rises but at least it would be a step in the right direction.

It cant hurt but there is simply not enoughf room on earth to plant enoughf greenery to make up for the emmisions and to support humanity even if the will to do it was there, plus much of the planet is no longer able to support plants and most other life forms thanks to the dessertification going on in many parts of the world. The sahara dessert has grown tremendously and the effects of dessertification are plainly evident anywhere there was farming. Dessertification has also hit Armenia very hard, the trees that were cut down allowed erosion to claim previously fertile lands and turned them to desserts, also global warming has been very evident in Armenia, record temperatures were set on many of the recent summers and people cannot remember it being so hot. This summer may be different but you get the point i think.
