Chess isn't a sport. Sports involve athletics.

Learing how to solve and balance equations in subjects like algebra, calculus, chemistry, etc help you develop logical thinking more than chess.

Playing team sports, games like capture the flag, or even some tactical video games are better equipped to teach you strategy than chess, because even though they all have a set of their own rules there are more variables you have to face.


Chess also can become easy if you train long enough and have the proper resources, many famous players are still using known opening and defense strategies that have been around for centuries.

If you really want a board game that teaches people strategy, critical analysis, logic, etc, than look up the ancient game of "Go" (aka, "weiqi") it's much more stratiegic than chess, infact it wasn't up untill the past few years that a computer could beat a live person at it, and even then it doesn't win every time.

Really? A video game haha, fail!

We can argue whether chess is a sport or game, I could care less which one it is, but according to the IOC, chess is a sport.

The definition of a sport is any competitive activity requiring physical prowess and behavioral skill, and chess demands the control of somatic animation in order to reach and operate at an atypical state of consciousness- an act in itself is a function of the "mental muscle". So, albeit by technical interpretation, chess is indeed a sport.

GM Gabriel Sargissian is the winner of the open chess competition held in Chicago, USA in May 2012. He took the first prize among 93 participants.

Olympic Champion Gabriel Sargissian had an excellent victory at the open that was held in Rethymno, Greece. He scored 7,5 points out of 9 and solely won the first prize.
Interesting to know that his performance rating at the match is 2723, while the actual ELO rating is 2685.
Note please that there are few GM-s with ELO rating above 2700.

Currently there are just 45 GMs in the world with ELO rating above 2700.

Women Grand Prix is taking place on July 16-28, 2012 in Jermuk, Armenia.

Twelve strongest woman chess players are taking part in the tournament.

Among them there are two Armenian players; GM Elina Danielian and WGM Lilit Mkrtchian.

FIDE Trainer's Commission recognized Armenian GM Arshak Petrosian World Best Trainer 2011 and awarded him with Mikhail Botvinnik Medal.

This is the second time that Arshak Petrosian is recognized World Best Chess Trainer.

Fide Master Haik Martirosyan, 12 years old, among 151 participants all over the world, took 1st place with 8.5 points; out of 9.
Second place has 7.5 points.

Haig and I made several boards decades ago. One for him, me and family.
This was the one I made for myself. I've since (decades ago) given it to my nephew (twin sisters son).
