Tatev Abrahamyan to face Anna Zatonskih in final of U.S. Chess Championship

U.S. Armenian chess player Tatev Abrahamyan will play in the final of U.S. Chess Championship in St. Louis.

Abrahamyan defeated Camilla Baginskaite in the semifinal tie-break (2:0). She will face Anna Zatonskih in the final.

And the Armageddon ended with a draw. Since Tatev was playing with whites, her opponent became the US Women's Champion.

Thus Tatev Abrahamyan is American Vice-Champion, having the same scores, as the champion has.

Chess in school: Government says board game will help pupils’ IQ

Citing the need to help children develop their intellectual capacity, the Armenian government on Thursday decided that chess should to be taught as a separate subject at elementary school level across the country.

In accordance with the decision, a total of about 177 million drams (about $470,000) is allocated to the Chess Academy to organize the teaching of chess at elementary school level, as well as print corresponding textbooks and manuals, purchase chess equipment and train skilled personnel for chess teaching jobs. Another 386,100 drams (a little more than $1,000) is allocated to the Ministry of Education and Science for the purchase of chess tables and chairs.

“Already this year Armenia will join the countries where chess is taught in schools,” Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan said at the government meeting, stressing that introducing chess in elementary school curricula is a key step in the series of changes aimed at raising the quality of education in Armenia.

Armenia is considered to be one of the world’s chess powerhouses and is currently ranked fourth among some 140 nations listed by the game’s international governing body FIDE. The game enjoys tremendous popularity in the country whose men’s team twice became Olympic champions in the past decade (in 2006 and 2008). Armenian male and female grandmasters successfully compete in various international tournaments, regularly winning titles and top prizes.

I think this is a great step and makes me proud. Let's do it the Armenian way! A lot of countries have written about this approach. Let others learn from us!

I made a table of the rankings per population. Armenia by far is number one regarding the number of GM's (and average) per population, on every 89000 individuals we have 1 GMs, compared to Russia which has 1 GMs on every 680000 people. I think we can be very, very proud of this. Only Hungary is better when looking at the number of IMs and Total Titled, which does not mean much because those are lower scaled classes. It's not only a reflection of the "popularity" of the sport in Armenia, but also about our intellectual mind!

Long live Armenians, a nation of great chess players and true warriors.

This is, in fact, the area where Armenia truly has a competitive advantage; that should be realized.

I mean Armenia may serve as a major country that is training chess masters and GM-s, who come to take courses/workshops, know-how, offered by our world wide known trainers and GM-s.

Note please that we have outstanding position in chess, because of the brilliant job done by our trainers that are not that world wide known, as our GM-s, alas ...

In the second round Armenia is going to play with USA- on July 18 and then with Russia.

Our team members are; Aronian Levon, Movsesian Sergei, Akopian Vladimir and Sargissian Gabriel.

Thanks to GM Sergei Movesian's patriotism, who left the Slovenia to join Armenian team, now we are much stronger. He is 32 year old and the world's 42-nd player currently & RoA 2-nd player after Aronian.

Unfortunately Aronian is not yet in his best form, but I'm sure soon he will recover from the psychological obsticals and eventually become World chess champion. Now he is the 3-rd world chess player, but it doesn't reflect his actual power in nowadays chess.

Absolutely amazing how a small and poor nation can stand toe to toe with the world's most largest, powerful and richest nations when it comes to mind power. GO ARMENIA!

There is no correlation between being rich and being clever. ( or vice versa)

That is why many rich people have children who are idiots and many children from poor families become greats in life.

The secret is meritocracy.

Give everybody a chance, select your best without fear or favour, give them full support.

The nature of chess game, selection and hierarchy is just that.

One area where the oligarchs and corrupt Politian's “cannot” interfere.

Yes we should be proud of our chess players but for the right reasons.
