Uruguay’s Gregorio Pérez Agrees to Head Armenian National Soccer Team

BUENOS AIRES—Uruguayan manager Gregorio Pérez, 65, has agreed to coach the national soccer team of Armenia.

Pérez and Football Federation of Armenia representatives negotiated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and reached an agreement, Noray Nakis, Chairman of Club Deportivo Armenio of Argentina, reported to News.am Sport.

“We offered him to head the Armenian national football team and he gladly agreed. We informed him that we would also like him to work with the youth teams [of Armenia]. At present, we await the word of the president of the Football Federation of Armenia,” Nakis said.

José Enrique de los Santos and Daniel Curbelo will be Pérez’s assistants.

After retiring from professional soccer, Gregorio Pérez started his managing career in1984. Under his leadership, Club Atlético Peñarol were crowned Uruguayan Primera División champions between 1993 and 1997. Under Pérez’s management, Club Libertad became Paraguayan Primera División champions in 2010. The Uruguayan specialist has also worked with Italian and Argentinean clubs.

For all members in the Southern California Area:

Yura Movsisyan, who is currently off duty during the Russian Premiere League winter break, is having a soccer clinic this upcoming sunday at the Glendale Sports Complex. Though the clinic in $60 (going to charity) for kids ages 6-18, simply attending the event is free for people of all ages.

It's a great opportunity to meet a local star whose become great representative of his nation, as well already becoming one of the greatest sportsman in our history.

Well, I think it will happen later rather than sooner simply because the oligarchs in Armenia are so intertwined and Hayrapetyan and others like him know that giving up a smidgeon of power would have a domino effect (and having proponents like Haykakan abroad doesn't help matters).

There are some promising Armenian youth players outside Armenia. Off the top of my head: Armen Ambartsumyan (CSKA Moscow), Arshak Koryan (Lokomotiv Moscow), Artur Miranyan (Shakhtar Donetsk), Yuri Udunyan (Anzhi Makahchkala). I know that Ambartsumyan, Koryan, and Miranyan have represented the Russia/Ukraine youth squads although they've either expressed interest in playing for Armenia or made vague comments and such trying to dodge the question. But again, it's a reliance on the diaspora. Rubo is probably waiting for the moment when he can extend an invitation to these guys to become part of "his" national team.

The difficult part is that ultimately the biggest gift the success of the national can bring is not some award, or some international recognition; it's the hope it brings to the youth in the country. So they have Armenian football heroes to emulate, so you instead of an Ozil jersey, you can see an Ozbillis jersey in Yerevan. But the problem is, when you depend on importing your players, what hope are you giving your youth. What are you teaching them? Move to Europe and you'll have a chance to be a good footballer?


Anyway the new rankings are supposed to come out Nov 22 I believe, and Armenia is supposed to be ranked somewhere in the 33-35 range based on what I've read on different places

And of course his hold on his position has nothing to do with his performance or abilities
when you can keep your job after being indirectly responsible for the murder of a serviceman (while your fatass sits on billions of stolen dollars), it is fairly certain you can't get fired for doing a xxxx job. Soon enough though all of these morons will have what's coming to them

Yikes, the U21s lost to France 6-0. I think it's a display of the ineptitude of the Football Federation of Armenia and their inability to develop any decent native players (Mkhitaryan was something of a fluke; Haroyan is alright). Their current strategy appears to be relying on diaspora players who may or may not want to play for Armenia.
