I have two questions:
1) tatul avOYAN, vle khalOYAN, armen alOYAN... etc.
It's thought that these singers are of Yezidi origin. I've realized that many Yezidi surnames end with an -OYAN. Am I thinking too much into it, or are these surnames truly indicative that the name holder is of Yezidi origin?
2) I've seen many variants of my last name: Peloshyan, Piloshyan, Pilosyan, Piloyan. Does anyone know what "Pelosh" or "Pilosh" means exactly?

Well Federate, I finally did. I believe he said he was Irish. So we'll have to believe and accept that. However, I had a similar experience with a coleague some years past. He claimed to be Irish and I prompted him to look further into his family background. He had a very interesting story to tell. It turns out that his family WAS of Armenian origin, which, over the centuries had finally settled in Ireland. The same might apply to Kassian.

Not sure if Sasun will ever read this but Zack Kassian is NOT Armenian. He denied it in past interviews.Originally posted by Sasun View PostI wonder if Kassian is a descendant of one of the Georgetown Boys. Those young men carried out a rebelion against their teachers because they didn't want to change their Armenian Names. It was all they had in a new land.
If Kassian is a descendant, that would make quite a story. But, he went to Buffulo.

Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames
Kessisoglu? It's the Turkified form of Keshishian, I know - I have "keshish=monk, hermit" in Turkish, does it mean the same in Armenian? If it does, does that mean that the original bearer of this name was relative (or maybe a servant) of a monk?

Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames
"ÕxÕ¡Õ¹ÕºÕ¡Õ¶" that's how core writes in armenian. "ÕxÕ¡Õ¹" means "cross" 100%. "ÕºÕ¡Õ¶" [pan] - "ban", in western armenian dialog - "who takes care". So in your opinion this is the most realistic theory? I agree with this. I've heard before about that "who takes care" meaning, but I wasn't sure that "ban" means "who takes care", because I know nothing about any armenian dialogs. So it means that my progenitor was working in the place, where the crosses were made and he was maker or guard in that place...? Intresting etymology
Thank you very much guys, I appreciate your help.

Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames
I'd go with Hatspanian which is a common Armenianisation of the last name Ekmekdjian.Originally posted by Yedtarts View Post“Pan” is “ban” in western Armenian dialog, it means “who takes care” or “who makes” but “Hach” to my knowledge is missing something because it doesn’t mean anything, however “Khach” means cross or “Hats” means bread, it might be one of them.
"Hachel" means "to bark".

Sorry for my english, there may be some mistakes... Our I have really rare surname "Hachpanian". I know that "Hach" means "cross", and want to find out what does "pan" mean. My father said that its like "to secure, protect". I dont speak in armenian and my parents knowledge is short too. I tried to translate and I found out that "protect, secure" in armenian sounds "պահել" [pahel]. So its not very correct. Maybe it means "protected"? If someone could help me I would be very grateful. Thank you.
