Re: Armenia and the information war
Expert: Azerbaijani side uses falsifications concerning 1992 Aghdam events, while Armenian side tracks and reveals them
Panorama.am presents an interview with Anzhela Elibegova, Southern Caucasus geopolitics expert.
- Every year the anniversary of the events in Aghdam in 1992 - which the Azerbaijani side calls ‘Khojaly’ - is observed in Azerbaijan and beyond its borders. How was this year different?
- First of all, the 23rd anniversary was marked with some passiveness regarding massive and new events by the Azerbaijani side. Factually, this year we witnessed the duplication of all those standard propaganda mechanisms Azerbaijan uses abroad. It’s also remarkable that the Azerbaijani side increasingly prefers to change the costly events in places, where the Armenian side breaks with counteractions, with virtual space making use of the services of bots and paid advertising.
- What new propaganda product appeared in 2015?
- Except for the 10-minute video clip by the campaign “Justice for Khojaly,” abounding with mistakes and naturally lacking factual references, and a new music video, there were no other noteworthy examples of new propaganda product by the Azerbaijani side. Possibly, it is connected with the serious economic and financial problems the country experiences because of the drastic decline of the oil prices and national currency devaluation. It may also be connected with the domestic political situation. According to the information of the opposition media, Ramiz Mehdiyev, the authorities’ chief ideologue - the head of the President Administration - is gravely ill and was not able to supervise this year’s propaganda campaign. If both of the suppositions are baseless, a further decline of the rate can be expected in the following year, too.
- Which were the Armenian side’s actions?
- There is no necessity to reinvent the wheel. As long as the Azerbaijani propaganda makes loads of reasons to analyze and reveal falsifications regarding the events in Aghdam during the year, what remains to do in February is to make them available for the public. It is noteworthy that the foreign media covering the topic have begun to question the Azerbaijani version, bringing in the arguments of the Armenian side concerning the inconsistencies and contradictions of the Azerbaijani version. This is certainly a result of the painstaking work of a group of professionals who monitor, collect and analyze the Azerbaijani disinformation every year. It should be noted that to this day the Armenian side has not received a comprehensible and factual answer to any of the voiced questions regarding the doubtful circumstances in which the Khojaly people died at the Azerbaijani positions near Aghdam. And it is impossible to endlessly circulate one and the same falsification exceptionally emotionally, without operating on facts.
- Particularly, what are they trying to falsify in Azerbaijan?
- Any circumstance of what happened. For 5 years, the Azerbaijani side is continuously being caught on using photos taken at other occasions at a different time. It would seem that it is time to be ashamed and cease accompanying booklets and other printed material for distribution with the photos of the victims of Kosovo conflict, earthquake in Turkey, Hamas fighters, etc. Gratefully, they do not circulate the Rwanda genocide victims’ photos. But, wait; the representatives of the Armenian Diaspora have again seized such kind of flyers and posters this year. Suppose, there is no money to print new ones, but they can at least give up using the banners from the Armenian site Xocali.net - which reveals the Azerbaijani falsification – in their propaganda events. Moreover, the banner in English itself directly shows that; however, it seems those who use it have some issues with the knowledge of the English language.
The above-mentioned site also presents new unmasking of falsifications based on the Aghdam events ‘eyewitness testimonies’ published during the whole 2014. As a propaganda product by the Azerbaijani side this year, the publication of a major book can be noted which contains ‘eyewitness testimonies.’ It is practically useless, because except for the Armenian experts unmasking falsifications, there are very few people who read such kind of literature, even among the Azerbaijanis.
The Azerbaijani side can’t also make out its lists of casualties, which apart from differing from each other and containing names of sexually mature men who have taken part in military operations and those died in other circumstances at other times, don’t contain 613 names – the officially stated number. Moreover, the Azerbaijani propaganda ‘raised’ the number of the Khojaly residents to 7,000. Also, describing the events, they refer to the HRW report as an authoritative source. It points out a total of 300 casualties. This means that, according to the Azerbaijani propaganda, the remaining 6,300 people reached Aghdam quite safely. This can by no circumstances be qualified as genocide; besides, it also confirms the Armenian side’s claim of a humanitarian corridor’s availability. Considering the list of the 613 people and excluding women, children and old people from it in accordance with the numbers of the Azerbaijani side, we get 347 armed men, that is, more than half of the stated ‘civilians.’
- Does the Azerbaijani side react to the revelations?
- The Azerbaijani side just prefers to ignore the questions which require simple logic; yet these questions do not cease to exist. However, the reaction of the Azerbaijani side is quite clear, as every attempt to make up a justification for inconsistencies serves another reason for the Armenian side to make a noisy unmasking. Actually, we have got into an infinite loop, where one of the sides, lacking facts, makes use of falsifications, which the opposing side vigilantly tracks and reveals.

Activists Turn Their Backs to Denialist Speakers at UofT
By Contributor on February 27, 2015 in Headline, News
TORONTO, CanadaOn Feb. 27, Armenian youth held a silent protest at a lecture entitled WWI 100th Anniversary-Human Suffering in Eastern Anatolia, featuring genocide deniers Justin McCarthy and Bruce Fein. The lecture, organized by the Federation of Canadian Turkish Associations, was held at the University of Toronto (UofT), St. George Campus.
Over 70 human rights activists from the university community, who made up the majority of those in attendance, held the silent protest by standing in unison and turning their backs to the lecturers. The Armenian Youth Federation of Canada (AYF Canada), in collaboration with the Armenian Students Association (ASA) of UofT St. George and Scarborough campuses, and the Armen Karo Student Association spearheaded this protest action.

Over 70 human rights activists from the university community, who made up the majority of those in attendance, held the silent protest by standing in unison and turning their backs to the lecturers.
Protesters allowed the speakers to deliver their opening remarks. However, when it became apparent that the speakers would deny and misconstrue the factuality of the Armenian Genocide, the group stood up and turned their backs to the podium as a silent protest against genocide denial.
Several racial slurs and discriminatory comments were directed at the protesters as they stood in silence.
Lecture organizers briefly stopped the event, but after campus police made it clear that the form of protest did not interfere with the event, they were asked to continue.
Protesters continued standing with their backs to the podium as Fein spoke, then marched out in an organized walk-out, leaving the remaining twenty or so attendees to listen to the rest of the lecture.
The demonstrators then marched to UofTs Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office to voice their concern regarding the event, and to deliver a petition of over 2,000 signatures denouncing the event and demanding that the university distance itself from the organizers and speakers. The group had previously sent to the university a letter signed by academics, human rights groups, and student associations, including Hillel of Greater Toronto, the Greek Students Association of UofT-Scarborough, and the Hellenic Students Association of Ryerson University, demanding that this event be cancelled.
McCarthy, who was previously turned away from the University of Melbourne and Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2013, has long been regarded as a mouthpiece of the Turkish state in spreading denial of the Armenian Genocide. Fein is employed by the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) as a resident scholar, to similarly support and propagate the Turkish denial policy of the Armenian Genocide, and has penned several articles attacking the veracity of the genocide.
AYF-Canada Chairperson Daron Keskinian said it was extremely troubling that such an event took place at UofT.
As we saw today, the University of Toronto should distance itself from this event immediately. The lecture organizers have used the location to bring legitimacy to their event, and have been given free rein to present their denial propaganda at the expense of the Universitys reputation, said Keskinian.

The ASA of UofT released a statement stressing that the event should be disconcerting to the university community at large.
In the interest of maintaining its integrity and making amends for this event taking place on campus, the University of Torontos Presidents Office should release a statement indicating that they distance themselves from this event. The Armenian Genocide is taught at this institution and the University of Toronto should not provide podiums to those who are looking to legitimize their denial of the first genocide of the twentieth century, read the statement.
2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and is being commemorated globally by countless organizations and governments. In 2004, the Canadian Parliament passed a resolution acknowledging the Armenian Genocide and condemning it as a crime against humanity.

Armenian Community in Argentina Rallied Against Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad Massacres at Azeri Embassy
The Armenian community in Argentina rallied on Friday February 27 to the embassy of Azerbaijan to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the massacres of Armenians in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad and report the anti-armenian activities of Azeri diplomats in Argentina, Agencia Prensa Armenia reports.
STEPANAKERT, FEBRUARY 28, ARTSAKHPRESS: "The killings, persecution, harassment, dispossession and displacement of the Armenians living in Azerbaijan until the late eighties constitutes a crime against humanity that the Azerbaijani State must take responsibility," denounced Ary Assadourian, member of the Armenia Youth Federation (AYF) in his speech.
The rally was organized by AYF and was attended by over 300 people along with a number of political organizations that support the Armenian cause. Moreover, the commission for the centenary of the Armenian Genocide in Buenos Aires, a space that brings together all the institutions of the Armenian community, issued a statement days ago in which they considered that while "the Armenian people and their descendants in many parts of world prepare to commemorate the centenary of the worst disaster suffered throughout its long history," the massacres of Armenians in Azerbaijan "can not be dissociated from the discriminatory policies that the Turkish state and its allies develop in the South Caucasus".

S.D. Hunchakian Nazarbek Youth Protest Azeri Propaganda Event
By MassisPost Updated: February 25, 2015
PARIS The Social Democrat Hunchakian Partys Nazarbek Youth Movement, took to the streets to protest the European Azerbaijan Societys (TEAS) event on Feb. 24, commemorating the disputed Khojaly massacre at the Adyar Theater located in the 7th district in Paris.
The Youth of Nazarbek expressed their indignation towards the event which propagated lies and distorted history. The youth distributed literature exposing the injustices of Aliyevs dictatorship, and held up protest signs that read France and Armenia are not for sale.
The purpose of this event promoting a fictitious massacre, was to create an illusion of an Azeri diaspora by the well-funded, oil rich Azeri government, the Nazarbek Youth Movement declared in a statement. The Azeris believe that they are establishing a diaspora under the appearance of Soft Power. Yet there was an extremely low turnout at the event proving that it was a farce.
The youth also expressed solidarity with Leyla Yunus, an Azeri human-rights activist imprisoned by the dictatorial Azeri government in July 2014, along with all victims of the war. This war, continued by the war-loving Aliyev dictatorship, has taken hostage, the Azeri and Armenian populations of the region, which only benefits the Aliyev dictatorship. the statement continued.
In response to the TEAS event and Azerbaijans attempts to blur the evidence by representing the victims as the aggressors, the Hunchakian Nazarbek Youth Movement will host a conference with Hovannes Guevorkian, Representative of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabagh to France, to commemorate the Sumgait pogrom, which took place on Feb 27 29 prior to the war in 1988. The conference will take place on Friday, February 27 at 8:30 p.m. at the Hunchakian Armenian Youth Center in Alfortville, France.

Armine Adibekyan: Azerbaijan does not look for justice in Aghdam events but indulgency for further atrocities against Armenians
Panorama.am held an interview with the head of the "Xenophobia Prevention Initiative" NGO, sociologist Armine Adibekyan.
- Each year at the end of February Azerbaijan with a widespread propaganda marks the Aghdam events that took place in 1992, which are called "Khojalu events". How would you comment on this campaign?
- I will not relate again and again what happened that time, I'd like to talk about what's going on today. The arguments of the Armenian side can be found in the film titled “Between hunger and fire”. And if somebody needs it is possible to organize objective and rational discussion with facts and not emotions, whims and wishes. But this is not possible as it never has been before. The active and uncontrollable replenishment of the emotional sphere is the the only and primary challenge facing the Azerbaijani side, and they do it as they can. The Armenian side has repeatedly called the for discussion.
- What is the grounded disposition of the Armenian side based on?
- We use only the Azerbaijani sources and the chronicle of those years. We compare them with each other, and not with the "Armenian version". Our arguments are based also on the contradictions of Azerbaijani propaganda. After all, the one who tells the truth does not need to lie, to change the story and the testimonies. The falsification of photographs is the tip of the iceberg. Everything that is connected with the concept of "Khojalu" is being falsified – starting with illustrations and lists ending with the testimony of witnesses. At present they have are on a new type of retrospective interpretation and presentation of facts. For example, Gyulali Binalu who had been "in captivity" in an interview tells about "the horrors" of captivity, where he was tortured by Robert Kocharyan. However, he or maybe the journalists have forgotten that in February 1992, he had given an interview and on the newsreel he did not leave the impression of a man who had been tortured. By the way, the next day, after the interview, this group of people was transferred to the Azerbaijani side. And Robert Kocharyan not only did not participate in the interrogations, but he was not present in the newsreel either. Another "witness" in the film "When the sun went out" gives evidence, but cannot exactly remember the name of her husband, calling him Elmar Akhmedov Naib oglu, who, according to the official list of the victims, at that time, February 26, 1992 was only 6 years old. The third one, Panah Magerramov, says that he had his ear cut off, while on the photograph accompanying the journalistic investigation, we see that both of his ears are on their placec. And the photograph clearly shows that these are his "native" ears, not prosthesis. What can be expected from ordinary mortals, if "competent" people, such as Ramiz Fataliyev (the chairman of the commission of on investigation of the Khojaly tragedy at Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan), after 23 years, instead of talking about what they know and about the results of the investigation, build their evidence based on "confessions of Zori Balayan" or authoritatively' claim via facebook that "there were 710 dead (instead of 613 yet unproven), and more than a hundred of children"? I tried to contact Ramiz Fataliyev through Facebook in order to get clarifications on topic, but received no response. By the way, any attempt to get a response from "competent" people on specific question remain in dead silence on certain allegations or facts.
- We would like to address the issue of falsifications in the lists of those dead ...
- The falsified lists of the dead in Khojalu have been studied back in 2012 in details. It is important to note several vital points - there are three official lists differing from one another; none of them contains 613 names (available options are: 630 names, 601 names, 508 names); over 70% of the victims are men aged 18 to 60 years, some of them have no relation to Khojalu at all - they have been killed in another time and another place.
- And, nevertheless, the Azerbaijani side periodically threatens to appeal to the International Court of Justice on wording "Khojalu genocide."
- As I said earlier, with such an approach and a collection of "factual" materials they have nothing to go to court with, thus the talks about the international court – the talks in favor of the poor, as well as the threats are designed for the ignorant ones. Anyway, if they are going to court with the facts that they have in their hands then I will attend that court with pleasure.
As for the considering the events that took place as a genocide, which supposes "total or partial physical destruction of an ethnic group", here there are a lot of white spots too. Azerbaijan's population in 1992 was 7,324,100 people. They will have to try very hard to prove that the death of three, even six hundred people, as the report of the international organization “Human rights watch” reads, served a threat to existence of an ethnic group that consisted of seven million people. It is, I think, needless to say that basically members of other ethnic groups like Meskhetian Turks, who were settled in the epicenter of the battle deliberately, were killed.
They are not looking for justice, but a "victory", as they understand it, which over the time will give them a moral justification in the eyes of the outside world for the atrocities and massacres planned against the Armenians. Perhaps it is already giving, judging by the statements of the first party of Azerbaijan, which are rather plain: "We will avenge", "Armenia must cease to exist," "we’ll be back, we’ll destroy and we’ll build our own one". In particular, the main product of propaganda in 2015 "Khojaly: A trial over Armenia" testifies this fact. People, who want to reveal the truth and justice, would call the book "The trial of the guilty." But Armenia and the Armenians are already considered as a culprit without trial or investigation. They need not the true, but the indulgency.

Remembering Khojaly Massacre perpetrated by Armenian forces
AKKAN SUVER
Print Page Send to friend »
Share on Facebook İlham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, was asking the world last month in the German city of Munich “What are Armenians soldiers searching for in Azerbaijan’s cities of Agdam and Fuzuli?”
Today the world has to question again the massacre that happened 23 years ago, since it is one of the black marks of human history and is still a problem for regional stability, peace, security and prosperity.
For that we need to go back to the early 1990’s, when as a result of the fall of the Iron Curtain, former republics of the Soviet Union started to declare independence that sparked territorial disputes among some of them.
Khojaly was a village – with 936 kilometer square area, 2,605 families and in total 11,356 people. It was blockaded by Armenian forces at the end of 1991. At the end of December 1991, the capital of Karabakh, Hankendi (Stepanakert) became the next target of Armenian forces, which also aimed to capture the only airport of the area with a strategic importance.
During the first days of January, Armenian forces cut the connection with the other cities and also cut the electricity. On Feb. 25, 1992 Armenian artillery started to fire on the defenseless Khojaly for two hours and captured it. One day after the attack, the Khojaly massacre happened, taking its place in the dark memory of recent history, never to be forgotten.
Some 613 Azerbaijani Turks, without differentiation whether they were women, children or elderly, were killed collectively and 1,275 hostages were taken by the Armenians.
The Khojaly massacre is not a war casualty. It did not happen as a result of the armed conflict.
Armenians did not fight against Azerbaijani forces, they just massacred the civilians.
This makes it a tremendous tragedy.
The perpetrators of these massacres are the grandchildren of those lying about the 1915 events. This atrocity took place despite the fact that Turkey became one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Armenia. But after three months, at the first opportunity, Armenians killed Azerbaijani Turks and expelled them from their soil.
In the Armenian flag, there is a picture of Mount Ararat; know in Turkish as Ağrı. Also in the Armenian national anthem, it says “our soils are under occupation so kill for it and kill for them.”
As an enemy of Azerbaijan, Armenia in reality is the enemy of Turkishness. What is our duty in the anniversary of this massacre is to tell the whole world the realities about Armenia.
The killings in the 1970’s of ASALA (Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia) and the massacre of Khojaly need to be told to the world persistently.
We also have to tell the world that the only solution for peace in South Caucasus is the liberation of Nagorno Karabakh from Armenian forces.
We are not a revengeful people. We can’t live with the hatred of the past. And we can’t speak to the next generations with hate and grudge. But in order not to forget and avoid similar massacres from taking place, we need to keep reminding the world about the ASALA killings, as well as Khojaly.
Where in the anthem does it say “our soils are under occupation so kill for it and kill for them.”

Re: Armenia and the information war
