Any genuine shift by Azerbaijan toward Russia and away from the west will come with a hefty price tag set by Azerbaijan. Russia is not stupid. Even if Russia undertakes any seemingly anti-armenian/pro-Azeri position, it won't be done without taking all calculations into account. Bottom line is Russia will never want a strong Muslim state on its border, where Chechens and other Muslims have long sought to break free from Moscow. In other words, Azerbaijan even within its current borders can be seen as a direct threat to Russia's territorial integrity. I am not even mentioning a pan-Turan stretching from Istanbul to the caspion. Turks and Russians can never be allies, they are natural competitors vying for influence and control, and their ultimate interests can never coincide. Azeris are the same Turks as the turks of turkey, and you would have to be real stupid to think that Azerbaijan would ever drop Turkey for the Russians--no question about it!

Oil, will be a dividing factor between Russians and Azeris. All or most consumers and market controllers are in the west and they won't like azeri oil to go to russian controll. So there will allways be tension and mistrust between azeris and russians. How we exploit that tension is our key.
There is too much in for turkey too to let azeris fall under russian controll.
That is why baku has not joined in EECU yet.
There will never be an easier point for azeris to start a war. The most possibles are desperation by ruling clan, falling into trap of self war mongering and miscalculations.
As long as we do not give azeris an extra confidence by any stupid moves and also guarantee for them that a war would be devastating for azerbaijan it will be avoided.

theres a lot of them specially as you head towards the North,they have acces to Azeri and Turkish radio and tv channels which gives them the chance to listen to aliyevs propagandas and be brainwashed.they hold banners at important events and soccer games in Tehran saying northern Iran is south azerbaijan,that is scary for the Iranian government and kinda beneficial for us Armenians since we will have a possible support

The real "Azerbaijan" is in Iran. If you look at historical maps, Azerbaijan always has referred to the area in northwestern Iran. In 1918 was the first time the area above the Arax river came to be known as Azerbaijan when a bunch of tatars along with other clans decided they were in fact some ancient nation worthy of an independent nation. Before recent years of Azeri propaganda bullsh-t, these people were relatively well assimilated and part of the Iranian nation. The Supreme Leader who is basically an all powerful dictator is half Azeri. Same goes for many many key cultural, political, and economic figures.

Today there's about 15 million Azeris in Iran. In Iran we just called them Turks. And like Argin said theres a lot of bullsh-t that they are fed to create a separationist movement. They have practically turned games of Tractor Sazi, the main team in Tabriz (northern Iran's main city), into fascist nationalist war rallies.

It's so utterly stupid considering the real "Azerbaijan" is in Iran and that many in the power apparatus of Iran are from Azeri origin. Lol How the hell can you claim "southern Azerbaijan" to be "returned" to you when it existed before you did. Lol and how the hell can you claim racial oppression from the power structure when many of those in power are of your race.

Anyway this is why Iran supports Armenia over Azerbaijan, the only other Shia dominant country in the world.

I think the opposite is true. The more they fall under Russian control the less likely they are to start wars against us. By being the first country in the region to join the EEU and the CSTO, Armenia has a distinct advantage over its neighbors. They will be playing catchup to us.

I don't think that's true. Once Russia gets a foothold in Azerbaijan, what leverage does Armenia have over Russia. What reasons does Russia have to continue to support Armenia over Azerbaijan. If allowing war is Azerbaijans requirement to become subservient to Russia, what reason does Russia have to discourage war.

By Shia dominant I mean 80-90% plus Shia. No they're locals. It's a regular occurrence. This is why Iran has been helping Armenia do the same to the minorities in Azerbaijan (Lezgis, Avars, Talysh)

Let's assume that Russia gives Azerbaijan the green light to wage war and do as it pleases. Let's imagine Azerbaijan, in return for subservience to Russia, takes advantage of the opportunity and conquers not only Karabakh, but all of modern day Armenia.

Can you please explain how fits into Russia's strategic interests? In such case, will Azerbaijan continue to bend over backwards for Russia?

Let's assume Pan Turan is created stretching from Istanbul to the Caspian, right on Russia's southern doorstep. Do you seriously image such a scenario befitting Russian interests.

And where does iran fit into all of these?
