King Aliyev is writing checks his army cannot cash. By saying such things, he only makes any solution more remote and Armenians more determined than ever to defeat him. Also, he better watch out for those Tajiks, looks like they're going to one-up him

YEREVAN, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Armenia warned Azerbaijan on Thursday against trying to take back breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh by force, after Azeri leader Ilham Aliyev said his country's flag would one day fly again over the rebel mountain region.

The war of words came as Nagorno-Karabakh, a mainly Armenian populated region that broke away from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s, marked its self-proclaimed Independence Day.
"The peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue can have only one outcome - international recognition of Artsakh's independence," Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan said in a statement to mark the day, using the Armenian term for the enclave.
"As for the military solution to the issue, that option, dear people of Artsakh, we defeated long ago."
Some 30,000 people died as Christian Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory assigned to Azerbaijan under the Soviet Union, fought to shake off Muslim Azeri rule.
Nagorno-Karabakh's Armenians, helped by Armenia, ended up controlling the mountainous enclave and seven more adjacent Azeri districts to form a land corridor with Armenia.
A ceasefire was declared in 1994 but 15 years of international mediation have yet to forge a peace deal, threatening stability in the wider South Caucasus where pipelines carry oil and gas to Europe.
There are frequent skirmishes on the frontline, most recently on Tuesday when conflicting reports suggested at least two Azeri soldiers had died in fighting.
Aliyev, hoisting the Azeri flag on the world's tallest flagpole on Wednesday, repeated a pledge to win back Nagorno-Karabakh and raise the Azeri flag there.
"It will fly over Karabakh, Khankendi and Shushi," he said, using the Azeri names for the region's main towns. "We should all work hard to bring this day closer and we are doing it."
Oil-producing Azerbaijan, spending heavily on its military, frequently threatens to take back the region by force, though analysts see little imminent prospect of war. Heavily fortified and holding the high ground, military experts say Nagorno-Karabakh would be very difficult to take back by force.
No country, including Armenia, has recognised Nagorno-Karabakh as independent.
At 162 metres, the flagpole erected in Baku is the tallest in the world, but could soon be overtaken by Tajikistan which plans a 165-metre flagpole for its capital, Dushanbe. (Additional reporting by Reuters TV; Writing by Matt Robinson; Editing by Jon Hemming)

According to APA news agency, “on August 31, the so-called provocative group of armed units of Armenia crossed the contact line of armies near Chaylu settlement, in an attempt to attack the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.”

Making a reference to the press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, the agency went on saying that “retaliatory actions of Azerbaijani soldiers have allegedly forced Armenians to retreat, leaving three killed and several wounded.”

In reality, on August 31, on the line of contact of Karabakh and Azeri armed forces, Azeri side made another attempt at diversion. The press service of the NKR Defense Army reported that Armenian frontier guards, having noticed advancing movement of the rivals’ special detachment consisting of around 8 people, took relevant actions, repulsing the rival to its initial position. Rudik Manaseryan, a soldier of the NKR Defense Army, was injured in a close combat. However, his life is out of danger. According to preliminary data, four members of the Azerbaijani group have been killed, and the remaining - badly injured.

Medvedev in Baku for Talks on Karabakh, Energy, Security


BAKU (Combined Sources)–Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrived in Azerbaijan on Thursday for a two-day visit to focus on economic ties, cooperation in the Caspian Region, and the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The long-running conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh will be high on the agenda, RIA Novosti cited Sergei Prikhodko, an aide to Medvedev, as saying. As a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group with France and the United States, Russia is at the center of international efforts to mediate a settlement.

“Though insignificant, there is some progress,” said Prikhodko. “The parties and mediators manage to continue the political settlement of the process.”

The Kremlin source also downplayed a recently signed defense pact between Armenia and Russia extending Moscow’s military presence in Armenia and committing it to defending its security.

“We are not saying that we will defend them [Armenians] against Azerbaijanis. The reactions in Azerbaijan are various. I do not think that those who are aware of the real situation are concerned very much; it is something else as far as the opposition is concerned. We don’t worry about it,” he said. “The [defense] document isn’t about military-technical cooperation between Armenia and Russia but rather about the protection of the border,” he said.

According to Armenian Public Radio, Prikhodko said the meeting between Medvedev and Aliyev would not focus on the Russian military base in Gyumri but on the more important issue of Karabakh.

The Russian source said Medvedev and Aliyev will discuss military cooperation between their two countries, but did not elaborate on the issue. It was recently announced that Azerbaijan will buy four Russian Ka-32 helicopters, used in utility cargo work and fire-fighting.

Russian energy giant Gazprom and Azerbaijan’s state oil and gas company, SOCAR, are also expected to sign a deal to increase supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Russia in 2011-2012.

Medvedev and Aliyev will also sign a border agreement that will delineate part of the land border that begins where Russia, Azerbaijan and Georgia meet and runs eastward to the Caspian Sea.

It is unclear whether the two presidents will discuss the status of the oil- and gas-rich inland Caspian Sea, which has been a source of long-running disagreements between the five littoral states – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan – since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

I have heard Turks talk about this Military base in Baboonestan. I think is a political suicide for Ankara but it sounds like something they may want to do.

Also Turkey and Russia are guarantors of Nakichevan so I would think Turkey going in there with their military would be in violation of Kars treaty and Russia will not stand for it.

However I have an idea, the single crossing bridge that connects Turkey with Nakichevan is very close to the Armenian border......accidents do happen on old bridges.

As if that little bridge would impede invasion , but Armenia should definately consider taking control of Nakhichevan if attacked from there in a future Azeri war, this whole area is a security hazard for Armenia's survival.

Azerbaijani Army loses one more soldier

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. Azerbaijani Army lost one more soldier. According to APA, the incident took place at the Defense Ministry’s N Military unit in the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan on September 2.

Abdullayev Javad Aydin, 18 drafted by the Military Commissariat of Kurdamir region, died as a result of disease.

Press service of the Defense Ministry confirmed the report to APA. A ministry official said medical experts were examining the reasons of disease Abdullayev suffered.

I could be wrong but as I understand the border terrain is very rugged and the bridge will naturally become a choke point for moving heavy equipment across. The border is only 15 Km long. Without the bridge they may have to use heavy airlift and there is no other airfield that can handle big military transport aircraft other than Nakichevan civilian airport which is also a Azeri military base. It is the farthest it can be from the Armenian border so it will become a logistic problems in regards to heavy equipments and war machines.
Plus, I didn’t mean stopping an invasion but I meant impeding their efforts.
