Thomas de Waal, an analyst from the Carnegie Foundation, thinks that military confrontation between Azerbaijan and Karabakh/Armenian forces will escalate. He also thinks that there is a big difference between statements by President Aliev of Azerbaijan and his Defence minister. While the President threatens action, the Defence minister is commenting on the possible resumption of war in a joking manner. The analyst thinks that Azerbaijan will not be able to win through military confrontation due to Karabakh's geographic location and capacity of Armenian army, de Vaal explained. He thinks that in the event of a resumption of war, thousands of Azeri youth would be destined to die.

TURKISH SOLDIERS ARE CONTENT WITH ARMENIANS

The Turkish representatives participating in the "Armenia 2010" military drills liked Armenians' hospitality the most in Armenia. Although they refused to give an interview, they stated that they liked Armenia a lot and would visit again if NATO organizes military drills in Armenia again. Ten Turkish soldiers took part in the military drills of which one of them was female. At the moment, the demonstrative acts of the international rescue forces are taking place in Arzni canyon. Rescuers of Armenia, Kazakhstan and Georgia are demonstrating their capabilities as they put out a conditional fire in a high-story building and evacuate people found under the ruins after an earthquake. Following the military drills are observers of different international groups. Attending the drills is Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsian. The Minister of Defense and the Secretary of the National Security Council will be attending the closing ceremony which will be held soon.

Azerbaijan violates ceasefire 27 times on September 16 night
                  September 17, 2010 - 16:26 AMT 11:26 GMT
PanARMENIAN.Net - 27 instances of ceasefire violation at the line of contact between NKR and Azerbaijani armed forces were reported on the night of September 16 and during daytime.

Azerbaijan fired 200 shots at NKR forces positions, aiming intense submachine-gun fire in the direction of Hadrut, Martuni, Askeran and Martakert.

The fire was stopped due to retaliatory measures taken by Karabakh armed forces.

One Armenian soldier was shot dead on Friday in continuing skirmishes along the main Armenian-Azerbaijani “line of contact” around Nagorno-Karabakh.

Nagorno-Karabakh’s ethnic Armenian Defense Army said the 20-year-old conscript, Andranik Sargsian, was fatally wounded in “the northeastern section” of the frontline in what it called a ceasefire violation by Azerbaijani forces.

The area in Karabakh’s northern Martakert district was already the scene of deadly fighting earlier this month. At least four Azerbaijani soldiers were killed there in two separate firefights blamed by the warring sides on each other.

The incidents highlighted the persisting risk of another all-out war for the Armenian-controlled disputed region which seems to have increased in recent months. The U.S., Russian and French diplomats trying to broker a peaceful solution to the Karabakh dispute strongly condemned them and called for “additional actions necessary to strengthen the ceasefire” last week.

Significantly, the truce violations were reportedly discussed by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov during their talks in Washington on Wednesday. A Pentagon spokesman said Gates expressed concern and stressed the need to strengthen the ceasefire regime.

The Karabakh Armenian military says that Azerbaijani forces open fire on its position in various sections of the frontline on a daily basis. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has claimed the opposite, saying that the skirmishes are provoked by the Armenian side.
