Former deputy military commissar arrested over graft

BAKU – A former deputy military commissar in Azerbaijan’s southern Lankaran region has been arrested on charges of bribery, the Baku-based APA news agency reported.

Lieut.-Col. Huseyn Ibrahimov, who retired several months ago, was ordered held in detention for three months pending trial, according to the Military Court of Baku.

Azerbaijani Military Prosecutor’s Office has reportedly conducted a scrutiny at the Lankaran commissariat, which drafts men for military service, and revealed blatant facts of corruption.

Earlier, head of personnel at Azerbaijan’s Military Commissariat and military commissars of numerous regions of the country were detained on corruption charges.

Military Prosecutor Khanlar Valiyev said in late July that Azerbaijan’s military prosecution bodies filed criminal charges over 58 cases of corruption and bribery in the first half of 2011.
