Also not to forget that unlike Artsakh and Javakhk, Nakhichevan's Armenian population is 0. We won't have a local resistance that would make it militarily easier and politically more acceptable to hold the territory.

Why we need local armenian populations ... its better this way nothing to afraid of,also Armenia at this point will have conventional warfare at state level and not local uprising.

Joseph, Armenia does not need to be the aggressor to win back Nackchivan. Azerbaijan's military build-up necassarily means that they are planning an attack, other wise their arms race would have been a gigantic wasted investment. Besides, they are getting desperate as oil is running out and their window of having any chance against Armenia is closing fast.

Guys I want to address a few points raised here. First and foremost NATO can’t deal with Syria, the Afgans or anyone else for that mater. Kosavo is still a mess! NATO up against Russia is the biggest joke going!

Another point someone else raised is the question of having 0 population in Nakhichevan as someone else said “Why we need local armenian populations ... its better this way nothing to afraid of,also Armenia at this point will have conventional warfare at state level and not local uprising. “ Not only that but what percent of Nakhichevan was toork before they took it over? It was 0! We are simply returning the favor!

Agreed, NATOs biggest nightmare is engaging Russia.

Personally, I do not believe that Turkey woudl risk conflict with Russia over the liberation of Nackchivan. Given the small amount of money and infrastructure development that the Aliyev administration has given that region, I doubt that even Azerbaijan cares about it that much (except to the extent that they do not want Armenia to have it). If that kind of attitude prevails, than the scenario will be exactly the same as it was 20 years ago in case of conflit: Armenian perseverence and willpower will triumph over Azeri apathy.

It is not about whether Armenia would beat Azerbaijan in a conventional war, we know that will happen. The issue of Nakhichevan is complicated because of a potential Turkish attack. During Artsakh war, Turkey was mobilising troops to send to Nakhichevan in case Armenia attacked it. Turkey is a safety guarantor of Nakhichevan. Turkey entering Nakhichevan to attack Armenians would not draw Russia into the war through our agreements with them because the fighting would be happening on Azerbaijani soil.

The local population matters because it would be a fifth column to destabilise internally. Azeris would attack them and we could use this pretext to go in and save our people, making it look more legitimate in the eyes of the "international community". Assuming Turkey stays away from an Armenian attack on Nakhichevan and we capture it. Then what? If there is a local Armenian population, governing it will be much simpler. But since there is none, we will either have to expel all the Azeris and leave the territory empty (horrible for international image) or we will have to "occupy" it with the Azeri population remaining there. This will make our troops vulerable to hit and run attacks, suicide bombers etc. There would be major problems with governing a hostile unwelcoming population.

Nakhichevan must be dried up naturally as we maintain our blockade. Hopefully, Iran-Azerbaijan relations deteriotate further and Iran scales down aid to Nakhichevan. It is true that the place is in dire conditions. It is ruled by a relative of Aliyev who imposes a cult of personality on the region that is only rivaled by the former leader of Turkmenistan. Tens of thousands of Azeris have left to Turkey to seek work (mostly in Kars) while Kurds are increasingly rising in numbers in Nakhichevan. One day we might be able to strike a deal w/ these Kurds...

Breaking News: Rhode Island Legislature Supports Freedom of Artsakh

State House Calls on U.S. Government to Recognize Nagorno Karabakh Republic’s Independence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (A.W.)—The Rhode Island House passed a resolution today calling on the U.S. President and Congress to recognize the independence of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR). The resolution also encouraged the republic’s “continued efforts to develop as a free and independent nation,” and praised Artsakh’s “constructive involvement with the international community and its efforts to reach a lasting solution to the existing regional problems.”

“I thank the Rhode Island House for passing this resolution in support of Karabakh’s aspirations for freedom, and hope that the legislature’s commitment to our shared values of human rights and justice will set an example for other legislatures in the U.S. and beyond,” said Robert Avetisyan, the permanent representative of NKR in the U.S. and Canada.

The resolution was voted on the House floor in the presence of Avetisyan, whom House speaker Gordon Fox (D) warmly welcomed in his introductory remarks. Fox also welcomed a delegation from the local Armenian community accompanying Avetisyan: Chairman of the Armenian Cultural Association of R.I. Hagop Donoyan, youth advisor to the AYF of R.I. Levon Attarian, member of the board of trustees of the Sts. Vartanantz Church Stephen Elmasian, and member of the ARF Eastern U.S. Central Committee Ani Haroian.

Dozens of local Armenian-Americans filled the gallery of the House during the session.

Almost concurrently, on Capitol Hill, Congressmen James Langevin (D-R.I.) and Congressman David Cicilline (D-R.I.) made statements on the House floor in support of the people of NKR. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.), in turn, issued statements.

“It is more important than ever that the United States maintain a principled stand for peace in this region, show that democracy can be born from conflict, and support Nagorno-Karabakh,” said Langevin. “It is my sincerest hope that Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to self-determination can be affirmed without further loss of life.”

“20 years ago, the people of Nagorno Karabakh fought and died for their independence from Soviet Azeri repression and discrimination,” said Cicilline. “I join the people of Nagorno Karabakh today in recognizing the 20th anniversary of their independence and the formation of the Republic’s Army and the liberation of Shushi.”


Representative Avetisyan will continue his meetings in Rhode Island over the next several days, pursuing economic development opportunities for NKR. His visit will conclude on May 20 with a community-wide celebration of the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Shushi.
