The reason I am classified as a failure
is that I write about Armenians
and nobody gives a damn about Armenians,
not even Armenians.
And if you say Saroyan wrote about Armenians
and he was not a failure, I’ll say,
Saroyan did not write about Armenians,
he invented them.
He invented them as surely as Kazantzakis
invented Zorba,
Cervantes invented the Don,
and Shakespeare invented Hamlet.

Have you ever heard anyone say
I visited Greece, Spain or Denmark
and met three Zorbas, two Dons,
and four Hamlets?
