Power pole fires across the Denver metro area have caused scattered power outages Monday afternoon, affecting at least 22,000 people at one point, Xcel Energy said.
According to Mark Stutz, an Xcel spokesman, over time grime from the road builds up on the poles and around the transformers and when it gets wet, arcing occurs, which causes the transformer to blow and the pole to catch on fire....
