  • Lying vs Not Telling the Truth

Is it lying to someone, if you just don't tell them something?

Like, let's say you kicked someone's dog and then duck taped ( along with rope ) it's legs and shaved it and then spray painted a Satani pentagram star with 666, and you don't say anything at all. Now, lying would be saying you didn't, if it was brought up. But is it lying if you just keep it to yourself, and they never even knew you did that to their dog?

If they ask you if you know anything, if they talk to you about it in any way shape or form, even just in passing to mention how upset they are that some nut without two brain cells to rub together did that to their poor helpless dog, you better tell them even if they so much as just breathe the name of their dog or frown and look sad because of their dog, you better tell then so they can give you the proper @$$ beating you so very much deserve!

If it is important information, then keeping something to yourself is as good as lying. The excuse 'whatever he doesn't know won't hurt him' doesn't fly.

I know I'm gonna sound a little like G.W. here, but
When you're not tellin the truth, you're lying..and when you're lying, you're being dishonest. Honesty's the best policy...

      LMAO Alright that's enough!!!

        it depends...

if you cheat and don't tell rather than lie, then its dishonest.

Not telling a firend something insignificant and small because you dont want to hurt their feelings is another...

        I think it depends.

ckbejug: What you're talking about is someone being a jerk. That doesn't mean they're lying.

viollette: There in lies the problem (no pun intended). You're not telling ANYthing, so how could it not be the truth/a lie?

And....being dishonest is still basically lying, just a less harsher sounding word for it. In this instance, the only way for the guy with the satanic dog fetish to lie is to come right out and say "I had nothing to do with it" when interrogated. End of story. You guys are mixing up the emotions of being pissed off at what the person did with lying.

I agree with Crimson..your only lying if the person asks you whether you did it or you know anything about it and you deny it. If the topic is never brought up and you never mention it then your not exactly lying.

its only a lie when you are asked about something(it) , or doing something, and you dont tell the truth

              words are meaningless and forgettable...
words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm.

If a person considers something about you and it is not the truth but you do not tell him/her that it is not the truth, then you are lying.
There are more scenarios, but you are not being specific. So to simply answer the question,
Is it lying to someone, if you just don't tell them something?
You are lying when asked about something or commited to something and do not tell the truth. Other than that, you're not lying.
                I see...
