Profs can make as little as 42k to 200+... It's varied, but after 10-15 yrs you can probably get to 90-100k. Not spectacular I know, but you can consult to supplement (guess it depends on the discipline) or teach summers, get grants, etc. And you can go on sabbatical. :-D

The starting salary for a lot of engineering professors at top research schools is easily $75K+ for 9 months ... which translates to roughly $100K for the year. Money wise, you could probably do better in the industry with a PhD but there are a lot of benefits to being a research professor ... for one thing, you get to do what you want to do. But on the down side, you constantly have to chase funding to try to fund your research. Almost all top schools expect their research professors (before tenure) to basically support themselves with funding. After tenure, it's a different story
In a sense, more often than not, a research professor turns into an intellectual prostitue willing to work on any project for which there is adqeuate funding
