Sip is no help with humanities. ... I slept in my classes (when I actually did go). But I have to say that sometimes I wish I had read some of the assignments ... I remember we had to read some cool books like Homer's Odyssey and Epic of Gilgamesh and what not ... and the very few things I do remember from just overhearing in class (or from exam questions) I have used on numerous occasions to just pretend to know a lot more than I actually know about stuff

I'm in college, as most of you should know, and my major is undecided. I'm taking general education classes right now, and I registered for a Humanities class since I need the credits to transfer.

Depending on how your requirements are structured, you might be able to take several humanities courses before you need to decide. I’m not sure about your school, but often humanities courses above intro level are cross-listed. For example, you might be able to take a course in environmental ethics and later decide to have that course fill a requirement for a science major or history of math for a math major. Many schools also have an ethnic studies or diversity requirement that often overlaps with humanities. You could pick humanities courses that will cover another requirement. If you plan your courses early on to potentially cover many requirements, you’ll likely find that you have much more flexibility later on with electives. That should mean you will be able to select courses that sound interesting to you rather than taking something because it is the only course available to fill some requirement.

I would say that if the humanities interest you, you should try to meet with a professor in the department and ask those questions of him/her too. My general feeling about college degrees is that, unless you know what you want to do requires a specific kind of degree (computers, science, technical fields), much of the value of a degree is the degree and associated GPA (especially if you decide to get a graduate degree.)

The starting salary for a lot of engineering professors at top research schools is easily $75K+ for 9 months ... which translates to roughly $100K for the year. Money wise, you could probably do better in the industry with a PhD but there are a lot of benefits to being a research professor ... for one thing, you get to do what you want to do. But on the down side, you constantly have to chase funding to try to fund your research. Almost all top schools expect their research professors (before tenure) to basically support themselves with funding. After tenure, it's a different story

In a sense, more often than not, a research professor turns into an intellectual prostitue willing to work on any project for which there is adqeuate funding

Well top research schools are a different story, but positions there are hard to get and at least in psych you'd be more likely to be able to get them if you establish yourself a bit elsewhere or at least do a post-doc.

I checked the CSU system last year and asst profs get 42 (maybe it's a bit more now) for 9 months. It's pretty sad. Profs at junior colleges start out making more than that even ( ~ 50k), but their ceiling is much lower.

Grants are a must though... You can buy yourself out of courses with them and focus on research or just pay yourself from the grant. My program alone (not the dept) has over 1 million in grant money.


I know nothing about humanities though. There may not be as much of a need in that area... *shrug*. Not sure what research they'd do.
