    Re: Air Travel

I was on a flight across country to Cali a few years ago. We had a stop in St. Louis. I usually ask for the emergency row (because there is more leg room). So as we approached St. Louis, it seemed odd. We flew around and around. I saw that arch more than I wanted to (knowing there was something wrong.)

Suddenly, the stewards come into the row and start pulling up carpet and climbing into some hatch. One came to me and ‘quietly’ reminded me (as he pulled out that plastic card) how to open the hatch. He said, “if you see flames, DO NOT OPEN the door.” WTF! He asked me several times if I could open the door, if I need to. The Capitan came on the speaker a few minutes later and told us that the landing gear were not engaging. We flew to the runway (without landing, but very close to the ground)… as I looked out, I saw fire engines, men in metallic suits… talk about ready to sh*t one’s pants! We did not land. The Capitan came on to say they were doing a ‘visual’ fly by. The gear looked like they were down, but the sensor read they were not. (On a side note, I am thankful for all those working on better damb sensors! )

Finally, we landed, with no fire or crash. The whole plane literally cheered.

I later wrote to that airline about this very traumatic ordeal. They were 'kind' enough to sent me two free tickets ON THAT AIRLINE, with a comment about 'these things happen.'

    Yeah, thanks. :P

Crissy you'll be fine. That's a lot of time in between to get through all that stuff. If by chance you do miss your flight, they'll get you on the next one.
I don't think they overbook the flight, but they take people as stand-bys. I've had them announce that if someone wouldn't mind taking a later flight that they'll get free tickets blah blah, but I don't know if that's an overbooking issue.
I fly United the majority of the time I fly and they're no worse than anyone else Small comfort I know.

As far as all the crash and disaster goes people. Remember that the crew's lives are at stake if something should go wrong, so I just trust that they care enough about themselves to have done thorough safety checks.

Side note: Don't go offtopic! Especially in my thread

I usually have strange things in my suitcases.
My mom gives me stuff to take back like Ghormesabsi (for the barskahyes) or those yellow lentils (lapeh). This time I had that Mr. Clean Magic Clean out of the box and disassembled. It's cute that she thinks of these things and I don't want to say "uhhh I can probably buy cleaning tools here." Also, those whole dried lemons.

The thing I was a little worried about was henna. I've started coloring my hair with henna and I ordered some while I was at home. They're packaged in these metallic colored bags and obviously they're powder. I was worried since it's not see through that they'd remove it or something, but they didn't. I didn't get a note from TSA to say they looked through my bag, so I'm assuming it went through x-ray fine and that was that.

Ack! That's pretty scary! Good thing it was just the sensors. I think landing w/o the gear is very tricky.
And yay for free tickets. I wouldn't worry about it being the same airline. That kind of stuff does happen and I don't think it indicates anything about the airline as long as it's one of the major ones.

I think they have smoking areas or at least that's what they say... "please do not smoke until you're in a designated smoking area..." Something like that.

Though it could be a good opportunity to try quiting too... I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but it's not good for you! More harmful to females even.

good point Siggs, lung cancer in females is a real cause for concern. Criss jan, I know of a great way to quit smoking, only works for ladies. Get pregnant! lol was that tacky?

hahaha I don't think I need to get pregnant to quit smoking....I've quit before (but then again, it's not really quitting, since I started up again, so I stopped temporarily) last time I stopped for over a year. Yea may as well give up, will be spending allot of time in airports and planes so might not be by choice

Thanks Siggi will try my best to quite before I come there.
